The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

As long as they also let everyone know why that's a dick move. How about something to the effect of "My convenience is more important than your safety, so I park in bike lanes."

I used to hand out small printed copies of the 9-40-060 ordinance as I passed cars in the bike lane with mixed results, mostly not giving a shit if they knew it wasn't being enforced.

I like your and Skip's ideas.

Sticky decals. I mean, like super sticky.

Which suggests alternate wording:

"I majored in dick moves in college. That's why I park in the bike lane."

"dick moves" hahaha!

I once yelled at a car that cur me off on the bike lane: go eat a bag of dicks!

This guy drove a block in the Elston bike lane to get around the traffic. Of course another driver, seeing him do that, did the same behind him. When I passed them I said "Nice bike" and this guy started yelling at me to mind my own business while rolling up on me. Great example to set for his kid who was in the front seat.

would you really expect anything different out of a BMW driving, self-entitled cheese-head jerk from Wisconson?

i hope you took the opportunity of being in front of him to go really slooooww so that he was boxed in.

Stereotypes won't help anyone in the forum.

I happen to be a Wisconsin transplant, and we have a BMW in the garage.

A car is a car. A jerk is a jerk. This driver could have been in a 1996 Mazda Protege with Pennsylvania plates.

apologies Ernesto, you are correct - i shouldn't have assumed cheese-head. and you are correct, the driver could be in a mazda from pennsylvania, or anywhere else for that matter.

what is indisputable is the driver is operating a BMW, is from (currently or recently) wisconsin based on the license plate, and based on Cheryl's post is at the very least a jerk, if not an overly aggressive confrontational jerk.

i believe it is a fair assumption that self-entitled applies here as the driver drove a block in the bike lane to get around traffic. we could even add reckless because of improper and illegal lane usage

Newby, all cool. As for the driver being self-entitled, that's right! This driver should be slapped on the face... hard, with a running start, for being aggressive like that.

Reminds me of the Maserati a month or so ago, accosting a cyclist that was in the bike lane, waiting for his green light, on 18th and Michigan Ave. Maserati bro was so impatient that he almost caused an accident trying to wedge from bike lane to car lane after the light turned green... unfortunately for the Maserati bro,  the light on 18th and Wabash turned red on all of us... by now it was the cyclist, my gf, and me, on the bike lane intersection. M Bro was about 5 cars behind... we could feel his unnecessary "my veiny biceps" rage.

Cheryl, what kind of camera do you use?

I did.

And while Ernesto is right about not stereotyping anyone, this guy was not doing anything to disabuse me of stereotypes of high-end car owners.

Cheryl, what rear facing camera do you use? How difficult is it to get an image or a clip out of it?
