The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

Yeah, there is always a risk of the company not giving a sweet f*ck-all...

That's about the reaction i'd expect from Flood Bros.

Still worth a try in many circumstances.

125 S. Franklin St. 311 reports filed. I will simply never understand why taxis and rideshare drivers don't pull to the curb.

I suspect it's a holdover from the days before there were lots of bike lanes. Without the bike lane, their nose remains in/near traffic, making it easier to pull out. That it doesn't help when a bike lane is present seems not to have occurred to them.

Also, probably easier for the passenger to get out. Coming out of a low-to-the-ground car and having to step directly on the curb = not easy.

(Doesn't mean it irks me any less though!)

This morning at about 835 I see this guy on a motorscooter riding in the bike lane down washington street for a good distance.

I always try to go to the original latin in these situations... Bi-Cycle...  so - checks out.

But, joking aside, there's some people with pure pedal powered bikes, some with  electric assist and battery power, some with the old chain-saw-motor type pedal+gas assisted bikes, some pedi-cabs with 3 wheels even. I guess as long as they're clearly not a car (or a big legitimate motorcycle /or an ariel atom for that matter... ) and if the driver's being reasonably polite I try to go with it - especially if its a vehicle that couldn't/shouldn't go on the freeway.  Polite goes a long way.

I think if it needs license plates it shouldn't be in the bike lane. But to his credit he was polite and wasn't gunning his engine or anything.
