The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

I would keep calling this area's members of council and reporting this to the police every time until there is enforcement and it no longer happens.

Bike lanes need maintenance and traffic enforcement. If the city isn't willing to plow/sweep/re-paint and provide traffic enforcement on the bike lanes, they shouldn't be installed.

This morning in the southbound Elston bike lane at McGrath Lexus. I called 911 on this one, as well as tweeted McGrath and posted on their Facebook page as this is really inexcusable.

I've been using Divvy since it arrived in Chicago, but this summer I started to ride it to and from work in the South Loop. Cars blocking the bike lane on Franklin has been one of the biggest safety issues. The Uber drivers are the worst, as they simply use it as a parking spot waiting for passengers.

I rode home yesterday afternoon, and had to dodge 4 vehicles in a 3 block stretch.

It's quite apparent that the police don't do squat. Can photos of violators be sent to the PD?
This morning on Franklin.

Another day, another group of a**hats camping out in the bike lane on Franklin. Anyone ever have luck calling 311?

The fun never stops.

I had a bizarre conversation with the garbage truck driver. He told me that he parked in the bike lane because it was too dangerous to park in the street. Apparently it's OK to look out for your own safety by putting others at risk of serious injury or death. Sheesh.

I've gotten similar responses from other drivers. Ugh.

Seems like someone should put some old fashioned Chicago style justice into action. Like what might happen if you move someones lawn chairs out of (and then park in) the snow cleared street space in front of their house!

Hmmm, if you do that, you better put the lawn chairs on the hood or roof of your vehicle. Let's not forget that Chicago holds the distinction of being murder capital of America.

murder?!?

No it doesn't.  Look at the rates ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_crime... ), it's about 19th with some fairly large cities like st. louis, detroit, new orleans, baltimore, oakland, kc, atlanta, washington dc, philly, pittsburgh all having higher rates.  New orlean, St. Louis, and Detroit have almost triple the rates Chicago has.
