Hi Guys. yea! This sounds great. I can meet up anytime after the school drop-off Ash. Would that work? Could do a test ride there with anyone too. I think you guys are the route wallas. I think that I could come with my whole bunch if it's going to be a kmass ride so that we have kids that ride and another grown-up to count in. Not ending at a bar???
We could bring a couple of bikes with us with simple and complex kid carrying style. This sounds fun. Keep us posted as it moves along. I think it's terrific that this came along Jason ,thanks. :)
Gin, if the grant is approved I'd like some of it to go for promotional materials such as printing stickers for bike racks or bicycles, half sheet fliers and perhaps a modest number of full sheet color posters for long term display in favorable locations like bike shops. Perhaps flags or signs for mounting on bikes during rides to help identify the rides would be good too.
Another possibility would be for safety vests or some similar garb for the ride leader, crossing guards and ride sweep. They might also have some sort of insignia or printing to help identify the ride.
Perhaps we could also offer some compensation for materials expense to those who volunteer to do face painting, balloons or other initiatives on behalf of the ride.
And if we develop a web site, any costs associated with that would surely be a good use of funds.
There is some great momentum growing here!
They are also reaching out to alot of other bike advocacy groups to attend. Currently they have firm comittments from the Safe Routes Ambassadors and they are doing some bike safety workshops at the event.
From the KM perspective, it would be great to host one of our "roving neighborhood" rides on the same day/location as Cycelogical.
Ash, their end of day ride is targeting adults (the ride is short and ends in a bar). But we are in communications with them right now to propose supporting a kid-focused/families ride either at the same 1pm end time or in the middle of their event (from 11:00-12:00). We are waiting to get a reponse from the organizer, Kristen. Todd or I will post here when we have more details of Kristen's response.
I suggest we have a Kidical Mass ride starting in conjunction with the Cyclelogical event at Clarendon park. Gather at 10:30 for a ride around the neighborhood from 11:00-12:00 that returns to the park. If there's interest, I'll commit to planning and test riding a route.
We can promote through our usual channels and probably get a modest turnout of regulars. But if the people hosting the Cyclelogical event can also help promote the ride as a feature of their event then we might have a very good turn out. For which we'd need to be prepared with say half a dozen experienced volunteers to lead, cork and sweep.
If people like this idea please add your thoughts asap, especially if you'll be able to volunteer to facilitate the ride. I think we'd need to make the decision in a couple days to have some time to promote. Especially because Friday is the Bike Winter Art Show Critical Mass and we'd want to announce/pass out fliers for the ride there.
I think it would be great to have a KM presence at the April 2 event. Jason and Jennifer--are you willing to be leads on organizing? I am sure we can get some flyers ready.
Also, we have an opportunity to seek about $2000 in funding to support the growth of Kidical Mass/biking with kids as it relates to promoting overall livability in Chicago. I need to get the proposal in by this Wed pm, so it is a tight turn around. What are your thoughts on resources we need to get the word out? This is one of those situations where an opportunity has presented itself and I want to take advantage. Please email me at gin_kilgore at yahoo dot com if you want to help out with the proposal.
One more thing--I have the log in info to edit the content at http://chicagokidicalmass.org/ I will get some basic info up, but the website needs some ongoing TLC and vision. . . . is this something we would want to use some funding for (ie, to get it designed and operational)?
I can come. Sounds fun ...but I bow to anyone else who does more org for K.M. that would go. It sounds up the alley of something Gin and the parents we did the bike winter workshop were talking about after the swap. We were wishing for a family riding table at Bike the Drive. Cycleogical sounds like a very nice thing!
