Should've massed up at the Target, you guys - a bunch of people got left behind on Roosevelt. Cars in the bike lane. Cops all over. Happy new year.

Hey, everyone!  I'm sadly going to have to miss CM this Friday as I'll be busy making our house ready for you!  NYE House Party for all Bikeish and Bookish, and otherwise Awesomeish folk in town!  Amish, too, but they might not see this post.  Anyway, if someone out there is making a map for Friday, consider making Lunt & Paulina (heh heh) the endpoint and we'll be ready to toast you and get you toasty!

Mayor Koch's bicycle network died quickly. Mayor Bloomberg's is remaking the streets of the city. What is the verdict so far?

Comments have always been included on the CHI-CRIT-MASS@UIC.EDU mailing list. That's why it's always been more attractive.

You know. Since the Chainlink started adding comments to mailings I have been just not going to the site and participating. Just lurking. Well I'm still alive everyone!

Thanks for the responce. Its always hard for me to make it to the winter masses cuz when its cold I don't want to wait around for mass to start. I guess that makes me a fair-weather masser. I usually don't get back on them untill March at the earliest. Maybe this year I'll try a winter one though.

I took the police presence as a consequence of the mass' failure to police itself last month.

I had imagined over 150 looking back from the head once we got moving on Michigan, but if 100 were counted I'll believe it. We ended at Diversey+Clark with maybe 40 happy cyclists. I'd love to hear the stories of how we lost many, being worried that Michigan traffic stopped the larger bikes.

The map I threw together hours before mass was based on Payton's Nov 2000 one, heavily shortened for predicted cold. My pals dressed for 29F and windy. So the cold was discouraging, but I feel we also always have problems when other events fill the plaza.

The police presence was indeed overkill. A cruiser corked every turn most of the way (which required racing ahead past us on straight stretches). And more than 6 bike officers (a 1:16 ratio?). Maybe they were being cautious about possible anti-consumerist protest intent, and were panicky at Michigan and Oak that we might enter LSD, but maybe mainly they were just trying to expedite us to be done with it.

We were slow at first (note to self: Michigan is always a crawl, could've tried State), but thanx to the small mass and cold weather I tried to keep us faster than usual later. On the protest point I gotta say, we went to the right places yet saw few throngs of shoppers.

There's a (rough) GPS trace of the ride at http://massup.us/ccm/r

It was the smallest ride in above-freezing temps in at least 6 years

The official temperature was 30 degrees at 6 PM - below freezing.

I know - I have a lotta cookies left over!
