That is awesome that you took on the challenge! You rock!

Strategy: If he rants and is obnoxious, take the high road, don't let him drag you down to his level. You will come out looking better. Keep in mind he may be more shy and nervous then you. You never know.

Talking points: A big point I would mention is the vast majority of people that encounter CCM are positive or indifferent. Haters are haters, and they hate everything, not just CCM, and they are the minority. Also, the stuff we do like corking is for safety, not to piss people off. I personally have seen cars hit bikes, as I'm sure you have too.

Break a leg Gin!!! We will be rooting for you!

Julie took the words right out of my mouth. It was brought me to 'the mass ride concept' and I have been glued to them ever since. Good luck Gin! You will be Great!!!

That's great, Gin!  Remain calm, smile, and you'll be way ahead of the game in terms of appearing reasonable.

Wow Gin.  Good luck.  I can't think of a better person to talk about the ride.  I know for me it was my first introduction to group riding. The idea that all these bikes were around me made me feel safe for the first time ever on the streets of chicago. It was my first encounters with the bike community here in chicago.  I believe it was a pre-cursor to all the great bike events and community we have here including bike the drive since CCM first went on the drive and then people realized it would be awesome to do it officially as well and make it a fundraiser (did I learn that from Immortal Class?) Not sure if that is true or if my thoughts help but feel free to use it.

It looks like I will be on Chicago Tonight tonight to talk about Critical Mass. I am super nervous given the tenor of Scott's commentary. But I feel I should defend the ride that has so changed my life. Please post me your ideas for talking points.

But if our champion "loses" the debate, will we have to call off Critical Mass?  hee!  as if!  If everyone who ever made a map or "led" a ride were to die in a bus accident, Mass would roll on regardless.  Still, might be fun to debate this guy.  Anybody?

Dang--it's Karen's night out, so I'm home on Daddy Duty.  This could really be fun!

I didn't interview the guy because he seemed inarticulate and a loudmouth. This is coming from me. I wouldn't recommend getting into a conversation with this guy. UNLESS you're a 60 year old Grandmother. Then that would be awesome. Someone who could really disarm him.

Want to meet Scott Rowan and be seen on TV? (see message below)

Chicago Tonight smells some controversy a brew'n, and they would love it if one of us would be willing to step into the fray. For those that missed the earlier discussion about Mr. Rowan, I think it's safe to assume you're in for on air shouting match if you show up to debate the merits of Critical Mass (he seems like a real hothead with some manic tendencies).

Hello,

My name is Madeleine Martino Fox; I’m a news producer at WTTW Chicago Tonight.  This Thursday we are having Scott Rowan, the author of “The Urban Cyclist’s Survival Guide” on our show to talk about his new book and cycling in the city in general.  He recently wrote blog criticizing Critical Mass and we are going to be discussing that in the segment as well.  We wanted to see if a representative from Critical Mass Chicago would like to participate in this discussion on Thursday night.  We’d be talking about both Critical Mass as well as general tips for cycling in an urban environment.  Our show is live from 7-8pm.  We ask that all guests arrive at 6:30.  Look forward to hearing from you!
