The fixie douchebags that hi-jack the mass don't read this. They likely don't read. ;-). I think it takes a multi tool and some stabbing action right at the beginning of the mass to slow things down. ;-)

And to think that I was going to bring Dr. Doom Jr in his trailer! Good thing I didn't.

The really sad thing about the cowboys is thay they aren't even going very fast, just fast enough to make the ride dangerous. IMO if CM is your chance to show off your 'skillz' you should maybe rethink your approach to riding...

How come this discussion isn't carried out on the mailing list as well?

This Chainlink has some attractive features, but carrying on a discussion ain't one of 'em! The display is upside-down, so you have to read from the bottom up, and there's no easy or sensible way to quote what you're responding to.

next mass needs more side streets and turns

Yeah they were road tires. I'm still learning stuff, so I just googled steel bridges and pinch flats. So I'm guessing that was the case, pinch flats when the wheel hit against the steel. That said, is there some way to minimize this happening when riding on this type of bridge, or is it just a case of avoiding it all together?

Where they pinch flats?

Steel bridges have lots of gaps, that and the open mesh can easily turn into pinch flats.

On another note....what was the deal with all the flats on the Lasalle bridge? I didn't get one, but my brother who was riding with me got flats on both tires. We pulled over to get him back in business, and there were a bunch of other people pulling over with similar issues. Is this common? I'd never noticed this before. If it's something that regularly happens, can this section be avoided in the future, or does anyone have any tips on how to avoid flats while riding on the steel grate bridges?

His flats ended my mass as I didn't want to leave him behind. We made our way to Kozy's on Desplaines for the quick fix, grabbed a couple of Maxwell St. polishes, then shot east to the Lakefront trail just in time to ride south against mass making it's way back North. Wa, wa, waaaaa to me.

Sorry if I blasted past anyone while racing to the front attempting to get us to mass up...I was just so pissed off though...so annoying that we were being led by a group of douche bags

Bob,

A fixed gear, or fixie, is a bike where there is no free wheel at all and the bikes that look like a fixed gear with only one gear but that have a freewheel are single speeds.

I like turns, they keep things tight and I am starting to feel that any long straight shot should not be on a very wide open road as that encourages people racing.

I agree that if a lot of people want to make it a the 'leaders' just keep their pace and mass up and let the hot rod kids go where they want at the speed they want forming a new front. I understand where the people with the splitting the mass argument are coming from but it is really a moot point because when the front gets going fast to avoid splitting it just creates a split mass at the rear of the pack.

Not everyone not at the front is skipping out an taking initiative; the mass front to back needs people to lead by good example, be the voice of reason and try and help to keep conflict and stupid behavior by cyclists to a minimum on the mass; you don't have to be the front of the pack to be a leader.

Now that somebody brought it up...

Are there two kinds of fixed gear bikes?

One with a single gear but can coast and hence requires brakes?

The other with a single gear but cannot coast, is fixed to the wheel and (except for legally) doesn't really require a brake?

Is there a different name for these two types? What is standard, acceptable names?

(Probablly a subject to create a form for. Feel free to do so.)
