CALL FOR SOLIDARITY WITH NEW ORLEANS CRITICAL MASS
from Simon Sevier
date Sun, May 23, 2010 at 3:10 PM

Hey ya'll. This month in New Orleans we are throwing a special critical mass in response to the massive BP oil leak. We want to contact other critical masses in other cities and get a feel if anyone is honing their messaging towards this issue or if anyone wants to ride in solidarity with us.

This is the text for our environmental press release

No Need to Drill, Spill, or Kill--A Clean Commute is Possible!

Let's Rally to Demonstrate the Power of Oil-Free transportation!
28th May 6pm, Jackson Square, New Orleans

Our society's oil addiction is an overwhelming issue. But it can be tackled in million ways-- transport is one way to beat the sauce, to stem the river of oil flowing into our streets. Luckily, we have a proven, efficient technology in the bicycle.

The oil industry a four-point threat to those of us that live, work, and play in Southeast Louisiana, because we host much of the nation's oil and gas infrastructure.

1) In the short term, oil production and refinement--including the regular spills--harms the health of our citizens by poisoning our food, air, and water.

2) In the longer term, oil pipeline canals, which make a spiderweb across south Louisiana, have destroyed our wetlands. These swamps, marshes, and barrier islands are nurseries for our local food as well as our hurricane protection from storms.

3) New Orleans is North America's own "island nation." Refinery emissions and their products foul our atmosphere with greenhouse gases, making Louisiana the most carbon-emitting state per capita in the United States, the world's leading nation for per-capita carbon emissions. Louisiana's damaged wetlands are sinking, and cannot face the stress of the new climate's rising sea.

4) the United States' oil politics have cost our humanity, our military and our economy dearly in the cost of failed wars and displaced peoples. Our obvious oil addiction weakens our relationships with other countries, as a government and as citizens.

What are we waiting for? Louisiana cannot expect to survive, playing the Oil and Gas industries' game. New Orleans is flat and compact and perfect for cycling. We have the potential to be a wonderful city for a clean energy future. We must take the lead if we expect the rest of the country and the world to support our continued existence on the slow-motion Mudslide we call home.

Please join us in a Ride for our Lives! 28th May 2010, 6pm Jackson Square, or in your own town!

Everyone the Map is ready, http://bit.ly/bFqMCp! It's in the form of a Google Document so that you can easily view it before downloading or printing. If you are having problems click the image to the right.

Spencer and I have been working on a May Day map for next
Friday's ride with Union Park as the final destination. Nearby at the Bottom Lounge on Lake street there is a benefit concert for the IWW and Tom Morello (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_morello) is headlining.

The music will be starting at the Bottom Lounge around 8:30 pm and Tom will be on stage at 9:30 pm.

Even better though, I just got word that Tom is excited about joining us out in Daley Plaza before the show. Happy Friday!

Tickets for the show at the Bottom Lounge are available here:

Harrison, see the thread from last April's "Earth Mass" planning, and the post ride story for useful tidbits. That route similarly used Humboldt Pk. Biggest immediate practical hints are don't date the map (in case it doesn't get used), and DO use the flyer exchange.

You may also find useful reading in the MapMakers group, and in my post-ride stories, and all over ChicagoCriticalMass.org especially the new cross-post on the RouteDev page.

Good luck.

i really appreciate all of your feedback. I'd appreciate if someone edited the map, and posted it again to keep the collective feel going.

So Steven was telling me though that doing your map is quite a pain, because you have to get to the front of the mass and lead everyone and etc. Is there anyone on this forum that LIKES to do that? :) i like staying in the middle of the mass.

Bikely is so slow with all those pointless ads no one will click on. When people submit rides via their system I just wait until Andrew converts it for MassUp.
