Comment by Spencer "The cause of the poor ride stewardship may have come from the fact that the cops were apparently running the show."

I'm not sure that's necessarily bad - the cops 'running the show' would certainly halt the cowboys from speeding and breaking up the mass.

Additionally, as we all know, nobody can 'run the show' - including the map makers! I'm not sure how the police could stop the pirating, hijacking, etc. that commonly goes on.

I don't think the ride intentionally massed up once. The only times we were stopped was due to traffic or rough terrain. The cause of the poor ride stewardship may have come from the fact that the cops were apparently running the show. There has got to be a way to counter their influence. Perhaps the map makers should be encouraged to use a bullhorn. Nothing says I know where we are going like a loud horn.

I wasn't aware of it happening at the time but I hear we had a Copwatcher there and I hope he provided the suspects friends with the number for First Defense Legal, 1800LAWREP4 . I have yet to get a report of the incident.

I didn't see a very pronounced police presence at all during the ride - maybe one or two cycling cops but I didn't see whether they were at the front or just mingling amongst riders. I have to imagine that with the Taste of Chicago, they may have been needed elsewhere.

It sounds like at times last night's ride got kind of hairy - I saw one motorist start to get belligerent (getting out of his car) on 24th street near the bridge over the highway as we were heading west. I also saw a cyclist wipe out on West Cermak on the train tracks. I ended up leaving after that one intersection near Navy Pier was "taken over".

Overall, I thought it was a good ride - pleasantly disorganized but still robust - and I'm glad we were able to overcome the traffic delays when we first started.

Steve- the girl was hit by angry suit guy at Taylor and either Clinton or Jefferson. And I was riding upthe hill yo the top of the bridge when the guy threw the limo driver's keys- heard it had something to with being spit on? We got on Lakeshore, and immediately unmarked cop car sped up to block, eventually hitting someone.. turned around Think I and saw the guy being cuffed! We got on the path at Monroe and rode up to Gannons got FBC. When and where was the pepper spray incident? And where did the front part of Mass take Lakeshore?

So part of mass made it to the planned end point. I stopped on the bridge at balbo and lake shore. At this spot I met up with friends. When the cops came and cleared off the bridge I saw the limo driver saying he was assaulted and his keys where thrown off the bridge onto the metra tracks.
I later met up with a friend that told me about the people who took lake shore drive and where beaten and pepper sprayed.
Earlier I witnessed a cyclist punching a guy in a suit at an intersection. I talked to a cyclist who told me that a girl was corking and this guy who was a few cars back walked up and punched her.
I have ridden many masses over the 6 years I have been in the city. However there was a lot of crazy shit tonight considering how early this ride ended.

Howard, I don't think you missed a lot although the mass was so big we won't know for certain until a lot more speak up.

I was working my way toward the front as we approached the proposed school rally site. The mass didn't stop but continued on toward the lake. At 12th street some folks started chanting Bike The Drive and then the mass started north on the bike path. At the next intersection/LSD crossing most of the mass started pouring onto the drive. I paced the mass on the bike path. After maybe 1/4 of a mile cyclists started pouring back over the divider and back on to the path.

We continued north on the path up to Illinois street / Navy Pier. A hold up formed on the street so I looped around past the Pier. Coming back out the hold up was still in progress and cops were responding. I stopped a block away wondering if anyone was going to continue on and a cop came up and asked me to leave and I did.

@ rides? I must have missed the last one, but 4 cops on one guy with pepper spray seems a little much. How far was the traffic backed up I wonder?
