Updates

What's new? We're trying to find out exactly what is going on with CDOT. If nothing specific is planned yet, we'll mount a letter-writing campaign that vividly shows what we want, why and when (now). If they do have plans, we'll go from there.

John, excellent question!

All across the city residential neighborhoods have been demanding traffic calming. The response has been the proliferation of stop signs, speed bumps and a few cul de sacs and round abouts.

The stop signs are often ignored by cyclists, but this contributes to the problem of 'unpredictable/bad' cyclist behavior that increases animosity between cars and bikes. The speed bumps could be bike neutral, but many of them are not. Just recently the city put giant speed bumps in my alley that make it very difficult for me with a loaded trailer, especially when the alley is full of snow and ice. Cul de sacs can prevent cyclists from using a neighborhood street or drive cyclists onto the sidewalks which is also undesirable.

Bicycle boulevards are streets with traffic calming done with the consideration of cyclists in mind. There are many approaches and they make streets not only friendlier to cyclists but also make streets more pleasant and inviting for pedestrians, residents and children as well.

sounds like you've got a good approach. I can't commit to being a core-group person, but keep people like me informed on how we can give support. thanks!

Here's an idea... answer this question: what are the benefits of living on a bike boulevard? Even if you don't bike? How would you sell a bike boulevard to the random folks who live on a proposed residential one? Or non-residential, for that matter?

That seems to me to be the big sticking point--does the alderman care what folks passing through want, or does he care what his residents want?

Sarah-- I am working on the meeting place. I email CCGT and hope to hear back this week. I can't make the meeting but I will be there in spirit

Fulton and Oakley cross, in a relatively bike friendly area. Maybe both?

The issue I have with Fulton is that a lot of it is taken up with industrial areas, and I'd hate to impact that. I find Oakley more useful. It goes to places I want to go to often.

We were considering Oakley but Rob Sadowsky said Fulton would be a better choice for a pilot.

The latest is that we're having a "core group" meeting tomorrow morning, 10am in the West Town Bikes conference room. We will take our plans to the next level by figuring out how to delegate everything so that it gets done. Everyone's invited to be part of the core group! Plans include an online presence, door-to-door organizing on the proposed bike boulevard, making our own design proposal (like a design student's dream project), and building allies in government.

I have the impression that the City doesn't have a specific plan for bike boulevards, although I've heard a rumor that a pilot bike boulevard is in the works. But we don't know what street it will be. More information on the actual status would help us know how to focus our efforts.
