Updates

What's new? We're trying to find out exactly what is going on with CDOT. If nothing specific is planned yet, we'll mount a letter-writing campaign that vividly shows what we want, why and when (now). If they do have plans, we'll go from there.

One thing that concerns me is that if the name is changed, the focus may change too.

A Bicycle Boulevard implies a transportation corridor for bicycles. It must be a through street for bikes with bridges or underpasses for obstacles like the river or the expressways. Getting that connectivity is going to be the most difficult and expensive element of a true Bike Boulevard network.

However, if the name is changed to "Green Streets" then we might end up with a very different result. Pleasant green streets will do little to encourage more cycling if they are not an interconnected network.

Regarding Naming:

Living Streets? eh...
I think it is important to retain associations to the "Boulevards" concept. "Streets" associates more with single focus of transportation and asphalt. Boulevards also suggest recreation and natural, green spaces with trees plants, etc ....

Here are some other name possibilities:

My fave:

— Green Boulevards Now!
(emphasis on the benefit of increasing urban green space as well as it serving multiple users, reflecting the "Garden in a City" ethos, and promotes city planning for Sustainable Urbanism)

Other possibilities:

— Boulevard Parks

— Open Boulevards

And, at the MBAC meeting, the city asked for suggestions for a new name for Bike Boulevards as other cities are finding the name less than perfect. As much as it pains me that ATA has betrayed us by removing "bicycle" from their name, I think it is perhaps a good idea in this case to consider naming Bike Boulevards something more inclusive. It is not just bikes that will benefit. I am at the moment though bereft of ideas.

I think the idea that was stated out loud at the MBAC meeting was "Living Streets" which is not terrible, but I think we can do better.

At yesterday's MBAC meeting, it was announced that the city is planning to establish the first bike boulevard by spring 2011 - location TBA.

My Momentum article on the prospects for bike boulevards in Chicago has hit the streets. You can find a copy at your local bike shop, tavern, etc. In the article, Ben Gomberg goes on record committing the City to establishing a bike boulevard by spring 2011. Also, the article promotes the upcoming March 20 Kidical Mass. The article isn't on the Momentum website yet. Once it is, I'll send along the link.

I'll be attending the MBAC meeting (mayor's bicycle advisory council) today from 3:00 to 4:45 in room 1103 of 121 N LaSalle (city hall) on behalf of Bicycle Boulevards Now. I will request a status update on the Bike2015 plan which includes 10 miles of bike boulevards and report the response here.

My commute to work is 90% Boulevards. If your trying to get to Milwaukee from Humboldt Park. Just take Humboldt Blvd cut across palmer Blvd the hit Kedzie Blvd. I know it's not a Bike only Blvd but there is next to no trafic It's a great route plus why not take a ride in the park while your there.California from North to Grand is pretty bike friendly too but its not a Blvd.
