Traffic 'round these parts dropped off pretty dramatically a few weeks ago... hard to tell from the "I rode today" thread who's still riding, as one would have to conclude that Gene is the only one out there most days by reading it....

Who's sticking it out and plans to continue to ride pretty much every day regardless of weather?

Maybe you know this, but we "fall back" to the "real" time. It's the summer clock setting that is the artificial one.

I rode to mostly enjoy my last pre-sunset evening commute until the spring. I'm not looking forward to our nonsensical tradition of "falling back." (Kind of crazy that no one 100% knows the original reasons for said tradition.) A first ride in the "snow" is an added benefit, though we all really know this is not a "real" snow ride.

I ride

I rode in my yoshi costume. base layers kept me pretty warm, but that wind... sheesh...

The ride in sucked, head wind the whole way.  But going home will be fun!

As it has been said, as a cyclist the wind is never with you, either you're riding into the wind or having a good day.

Chris, sweet and thanks!  I've been thinking about finding some longer MTB shorts to avoid having to wear a bunch of pants unless it is super cold.

Hey Chitown_Mike,

These are what I wear:

They are light weight nylon with a padded and removable chamois. Nothing major. Much like you, my legs don't get cold too easily. I actually wore a light base layer tight this morning and they were overkill. Way too warm.

Chris, are you wearing gym shorts or something of more substance?  I usually just wear some neoprene tights on the cold days, haven't had need for anything more yet but curious to know what others do since my legs don't get cold easy, and don't bother me as much when they do.

Shorts are still where it's at! I ride shorts down to 34 degrees and then it's just a base layer tights under shorts down to about 5-10 degrees. Anything below 5 degrees then I put on the top-layer windbreak pants.

+1

I just checked the current conditions and they're saying that the winds are coming from the North at 32 mph. I should make it home in record time.

I can't remember the last time I had a tailwind.

Friday I took the train and the 6 blocks to/ from the train wasn't bad, then the ride home as they won't let bikes (as if I could even fit) on the "el" so I rode into a headwind for 8 miles with an occasional round of sleet, no gloves, and only a hoodie over my shirts. Ugh!

Haven't missed a day so far this winter! Just installed a trigger-shift on my folder to replace the twist-grip, which was hard to locate gears with. More snow in the forecast, but spring is just around the corner now!

Hope to see people at Daley Plaza this Friday for Winter Bike-to-Work Day.

I am commuting tomorrow (Tuesday). LFT both ways. Hope the path is clear. No need to go swimming pre-season (think Oak Street curve).

If you are out and about at 6:30 am, wave as you ride by.

Just a thought, but several years ago I bought some running pants from REI. They are Pearl Izumi, Elite level (not that I am). I wear them from 40 on down to minus whatever. Never been cold. Been plenty wet on the outside, never on the inside. I loved them so much, I tracked down a second pair after several seasons. I still ride the original pair after seven or so seasons, saving the other pair for when these get worn out.

Wow, thanks for the heads up on the Winter Bike-to-Work Day. With your better than fifteen thousand miles of folding bike badassery you are definitely my hero Doc. Very best regards, Tom B

I wonder how long winter will last this year.  The kestrels that nest in the building next to mine were back this weekend and last night I saw a fairly large spider crawling across the outside screen.

That said I've only been skiing once this year and I'd hate to pack it all away so soon. Maybe I can sneak a little time in at Sno*Drift up in Michigan next week, but it'll probably be too busy.

18+ Again today. Nice ride.
