Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

Also just a reminder to submit BACP complaints for cabs in the bike lane. I know they are only a small fraction of the offenders, but I think they are the most actionable. Every time I've followed through on a complaint, I've received a letter saying a note has been made on their file. Recently, the city may have gotten more aggressive, as I was asked to testify in a hearing about the complaint I'd filed, and the email I received from the city lawyer implied the driver was contesting the fine that had been levied. I know it's a pain, with two forms and such, but if enough of us file these, perhaps a) the city will have a record of at least that part of the issue and b) perhaps the cabby community will collectively decide it's not worth the headache.

Agree. I've always gotten those letters and being a skeptic, questioned the value... but will keep doing it!!!

at least they put up the orange cones.

The city doesn't make it very easy to report online. www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/311/supp_info/request_service.html allows you to select "Bicycle Program" but then you only end up with option to report construction blocking a lane, not vehicles...

I would contact city hall and ask them to update the website. I have done this here to make those options on the drop down menu more helpful for bike ped needs.
It could be listed as "Bike lane blocked"

Reported this guy to 911 and City cab complaints website after he made a wild U-turn on Milwaukee this morning. Completely ran over plastic bollard and almost to the curb inside the PBL as I was approaching. Didn't hear me honking my bike horn and acted like it was no big deal. I'm ready for driverless cars and trucks!

Just a block away from where Lisa Kuivinen's ghost bike is parked.

Thank you for sharing, but when such pics are posted, many users like myself wonder:
-->was this vehicle reported to the police? (ESPECIALLY parked in the wrong direction an easy ticket)
-->reported to the company that employs this dangerous driver?

-->did you or someone speak to the driver (nicely of course)?

I see a lot of pics posted here that tell a very incomplete story. What did the photographer DO about it?

You are welcome.

As I stopped to take the photo, the driver and his companion quickly unloaded some office furniture and sped off. It took a while for my phone to power up because I forgot to turn it on before I left.

Per usual, any kind of interactions with these people, even when I am speaking politely, are always hostile. So I gave up on engaging these ignorant road users and instead document their bad behavior.

Not quite on topic, but on the way home to night - I really felt this car was going to run over me and/or the other guy (I was passing) if I didn't brake hard.

Nice language buddy :)

yeah, I probably should have muted that out before posting :)

Interestingly, the water/air-proof camera case actually cuts out all but the loudest of the audio.

A fuller transcript of the audio would have been something like: "on your left ... if I don't get run over first" then the bit you can hear (think of it as a horn honking...) and later as I caught back up "well - that didn't feel safe"  and his response "yeah, just another lovely ride home"

I've forgotten what the other guy yelled at the car in the moment.
