To the rider who got hit on California yesterday... (Sunday)

My co-worker just told me your story in the office kitchen.

She called 911 for you from out front her place smoking & they transferred her to the fire department (??) which definitely doesn't seem right.

From what I have heard & read, calling 911 is the right thing to do because you should file a police report. Seeing as you thought you were bleeding, a piece of the car was on the street, and your wheel was bent/under the car/screwed up from being hit, a report should have been filed. 

Hope you are OK. Posting hear because I am fairly taken aback that the call got transferred to fire and the police did not handle or report.

I have heard that even with car accidents, many people go to the police station to file reports after the fact. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Yep, I was in a hit and run in my car a year or two ago, the car was still drivable, and I was commended by the officer at the station the next day for not wasting their time calling from the scene.  They said unless they're needed for an injury/death investigation or to control traffic around the scene to leave them alone and just go to the station with the details.

Take pictures, get plate and DL numbers, insurance info, etc..then go to the police on your own time unless you NEED them there NOW. (and, well, we know....)

SInce it was an injury, the normal protocol should have been to have the Police take the report.  But the FD are the ones who send out the Ambulance and the like and they are more important in the initial response.

No worries Renee-- this is what is supposed to happen when the operator asks if an ambulance is required and the caller says "yes." The good news is that the police have to respond in these cases too, and often do so much more quickly than for a crash without injuries.

Makes sense, thanks for the answer. 

Figures that after posting this, I get hit on the Andersonville strip after work.

I called 911, they transfer you to fire & ask if you need an ambulance  then once you say no, fire department hangs up & you are left to have the police come out. 

I didn't have them come & am going to a station tomorrow to file a report. 

Good to know.

I'm sorry you got hit, Renee! My girlfriend lives in A'ville so I'm familiar with the neighborhood, and I know it can be a bit dodgy sometimes. I'm glad that you sound like you're relatively OK.

That is awesome that that person is helping, wish someone would have done the same for me after I was hit. In retrospect, really wish I would have gone through insurance.

In which part of the neighborhood were you hit, if you don't mind my asking. I live here in Andersonville and wanted to see if your experience is similar to ones I've had.

I was hit outside of George's Ice Cream, Clark & Berwyn, headed home southbound from Edgewater Produce. 

Driver pulled forward into a Clark parking spot & didn't look before doing so or use his turn signal.

Had the same thing happen yesterday going Northbound this time, driver pulled forward into a parking spot without looking or using a turn signal. I was far enough behind & going slow enough this time to brake & avoid being smushed.

After that happened yesterday I was thinking of contacting the Andersonville Development Corp about these problems. They are the ones building the bike corrals and talking about the sustainability and walkability of the neighborhood, so I would hope they would want to address these problems with drivers & parking on the strip.

Ah yes; I know exactly what you're talking about. You're right that the problem is people never using turn signals or giving any advance notice. Most drivers tend to quickly scan back and forth for a spot and dart in immediately without checking behind them. 

As a cyclist, it's hard to predict these types of situations, because you really don't know the intention of the driver.

I find Behavioral Theory is the only option.  I reward those who signal.  If I am stopped and you are behind me with a blinker I will be sure to modify my position so you can turn.  If you are behind me and your wheels are turned and you are pointed to the right but you are not signaling your turn I will sit right in front of you.  Lack of signaling is a problem for both drivers and riders.  Let us know where you want to go and you might get some help.  I am always baffled by the inability of folks to state their intention. 

Clark St. in Andersonville requires vigilence.  There are sharrows for a bike lane but its a busy commercial area with vehicles pulling in and out all the time. I think a bicyclist has to be realistic that there is so much going on and assume nobody knows what they are doing.  Most of the locals are pretty bike friendly but even a good citizen can make an error and that is a likely place for the error to occur.  Street traffic is almost slow enough for the rider to pretty much take the lane without slowing anybody down while steering clear of doors, parkers, pedestrians and other perils. Be careful of right hooks as cars turn on to the east-west streets in that neighborhood.
