So, I lost my sh*t on 2 cabbies using Kinzie Protected Bike Lane as a Taxi Stand today

because I almost got doored.....wait for it.... by a cab sitting in the middle of a protected bike lane. I confronted the one cabbie and he wouldn't move so, yeah, if you saw a really angry, yelling guy on Kinzie, that was me. I took the cab drivers photo and told him I was sending it to Yellow Cab. He took off and another cab pulled up literally where the other cab had just left. Signs need to be posted mentioning fines for parking in bike lanes...the one cabbie kept saying: "so where do you want me to park" I was so pissed all I could say was "not in the bike lane". Sorry had to vent, I'm sure I didn't win any points for the bike community either...

When that happens, I usually just take the side walk since nobody, even us cyclists, don't follow any rules apparently.

You have the cab number?  It is a pain to wait, but call 311.  If you can call outside of "normal" times for people to call, it might be faster.

No reason to beat yourself up over it.  Shit happens, and you had reason to be upset.

I agree with taking a picture and sending it to the cab company. Also, as much of a wait as it is, call 311 too to file a cabbie complaint.

Maybe, just maybe, someone will begin to pay attention. Eventually.

I'd recommend doing both.  Worth the point to send a message to both the cab company and the city that this illegal action is happening too often and it's NOT okay.

Good for you!

Don't sweat it.

Gained points in my book.

Thanks for taking the time to stop and do that. I don't have the time or patience to deal with all those taxis, USPS trucks, delivery vehicles, dog walkers, joggers ect.. that think it's ok to take up a bicycle only traffic lane.

it turns out you won five points for the bike community, somehow

It's long overdue for some cabbies. I can understand just going around him and on with your day but a dooring (potentially) deserves it.

+1.

If you don't want to wait on the phone calling 311, you can report it on the 311 website: https://servicerequest.cityofchicago.org (select Cab Complaint). I do this pretty much whenever I encounter a reckless or horn-happy cab driver.
