Is this worth doing in Chicago?

Are bike thefts treated as felonies or misdemeanors in Chicago?

I imagine it all depends on the value of the stolen bike(s).

The two guys caught in Evanston this week were charged with a Class 4 felony. The PD caught them on the second day of their operation.

I wonder if making bunch of stickers of "is this a bait bike" and pass around would deter the number of theft... I am interested in making one for myself!

Love It! Love It! Love IT!!

Great Job Evanston PD!

If anyone (are you listening Active Trans Alliance) would make those stickers "This is a Bait Bike". I would gladly join for a sticker in lieu of their bike map of Chicago.

It would only work if CPD (or EPD, or whoever) had an actual publicly advertised bait bike program and used the stickers themselves, right? Otherwise, it would be fairly obvious that the answer to the question posed by the sticker is, "no."

If you join Active Trans I'll pay for those stickers.

When police make the rare arrest for bike theft do they ever take it further to find to whom habitual thieves sold to? If guilty craig's list users started getting fines and arrests for purchasing stolen property would that help reduce demand?

This Evanston gang should be all of our worst nightmare. A two man crew with a battery powered angle cutter.  For some reason these gangs seem to target Evanston. There was a bust last year of the guys who had a storage locker filled with stolen bikes. My assumption is there are more high end bikes to choose from there?
