Not a good way to ride!

The area is right by the 47th street intermodal entrance. A lot of truck traffic around that area.

Can we try to get some basic info first before we start getting into the obligatory game of "blame the cyclist?"

Poorly designed roads for cyclists certainly. Last year a woman coming from Lollapalooza was crushed by a garbage truck.

We really have nothing to go on here yet.   I would also like more information as to "fleeing" the scene.  Depending on how the accident occurred it is very possible that the driver could have struck a bicyclist and never realized it if it happened in his (or her) blind spot -and drove on totally unaware of what happened.

We just don't know what happened yet.

True dat. Anne Alt wrote two great articles about this:

Most of the South is unbikeable.

Would like to remind all users that family or friends of the victim will very likely be googling her name and finding this discussion, so please keep that in mind when commenting.

My Trib contact alerted me to the update around the time Cameron posted (but I was out and about). He said no age known, but that the victim was in her sixties.

I'm getting reports that a cyclist was hit in Madison too by a semi -critical condition with severe head injuries.

Thank you, Howard.  We need to remember the victim and her family and friends, and have some consideration for what they're going through.  It can't be easy for them right now.

From Brendan K's blog:

Update - 5:20 p.m. 08/07/2012:  Police are still looking for the driver of a semi truck that killed Evelyn Dean as she rode her bike in the Fuller Park neighborhood of Chicago yesterday, according to The Chicago Tribune.  The fatal collision occurred as the driver of the truck was attempting to enter Norfolk Southern's railroad facility around 2:00 p.m.  The driver fled the scene in the truck after the crash.  For some reason police have not yet released a description of the truck or the driver.

I would be happy to be proven wrong, but I don't believe police are doing any such thing.
