Footage of a driver getting into the bike lane and parking

This morning on my commute, I witnessed a driver pulling into the bike lane and stopping there to park. My helmet camera captured it all. I believe the only way drivers can be ticketed is if they are actually seen by a cop or Dept. of Revenue worker. Since I have footage however, can anything be done after the fact?

Post it somewhere (does twitter do video?) with the  #enforce940060 hashtag, as per this.

One of the go to moves is to have them see you filming them so that they get a clue if they ask. Ususually works.

I did tell the driver that "parking in the bike lane is illegal and I have it all on camera." Not sure if it had an impact.

Two drivers got out of the bike lane when I did that, albeit angrily, with one trying to take a photo of me as well.

It was funny really, after I told the last one you can get fined $150, she just peeled off almost hitting a cabbie.

I saw a CPD cruiser ticketing a car parked in the Harrison PBL between Dearborn & Clark this evening. I've noticed a few cars with 'I'm a parent picking up my kid at (name of school)' placards on their dashboards. If the tickets don't stop the parking, then I'm going to contact the school and ask why they think that a piece of paper gives their students parents the right to block a bike lane.

That would be JTA Schools- they've changed their name and location, but they keep getting some pretty bad press.

On a few occasions when I was not feeling especially generous, I asked (nicely!) people parked with their cars in the Dearborn bike lane to please move, and when they didn't I got my phone out and called 911 to report a car blocking traffic to have CPD send a car over. This got them out in a hurry every time.

I've spoken to the JTA School folks (I live in the neighborhood), and they claim they have a permit for a loading zone in front of the school, where the bike lane was just installed. However they don't seem too interested in giving me any details on when the permit was issued or when signage will be installed. I also contacted ChicagoDOT for details, since this can be a really dangerous spot in the mornings. Glad to hear CPD has been ticketing in the bike lane, a lot of us have been using the #enforce940060 hashtag on Twitter to push for improved enforcement (or hell, any enforcement). I'd encourage everyone to join in this effort, since maybe (?) it's getting some traction/results.

An aside: I asked one parent to not park in the bike lane, and she her response: "what am I supposed to do, cross the street [which she had just created a traffic jam on by blocking a lane] with my child?!" I think I just rode off somewhat speechless.

Hmm quite sure the ordinance does not provide for "permits" excepting vehicles from compliance ... it does provide for towing and impounding vehicles though....

Sorry, that wasn't clear. They seem to think they have a permit to construct a loading zone in the same spot where the city just striped the bike lane.

My name is Brendan Nestor, and I am the owner of JTA SCHOOLS. We do have a permit for a "20 foot loading zone from 7am-630pm. The loading zone signs can take up to 18 months to get installed per Alderman Fioretti's office. I apologize for the inconvenience it causes you, but we do have a permit and eventually the signs will be installed. We would appreciate you and every other biker to be respectful of our school and parents that attend our school. This was the loading area that was approved by the city of Chicago. You are welcome to come into the school to further discuss.

This in not an issue of inconvenience. This is an issue of safety.
