Limited exposure to sunlight and vitamin D common during winter months can trigger a subtype of depression called (SAD) Seasonal Affective Disorder. SAD is not just a case of the winter blues, but a serious problem for many people and that it can be treated. Treatments include: sleeping more, healthy eating and exercising.

Moderate exercise such as walking, riding a stationary bike, (or a regular bike), or swimming is a great way to get started. But any activities that raise your heart rate, including daily chores, can help especially if you can do them outdoors or near a sunny window.(if available)

My own theory is that the more fresh air you get..even if it's cold..the healthier you will be given exposure to germs etc. I bike through the winter and haven't gotten sick in 8 years!

That's my theory too. Getting sun helps as well.

I agree.  Much better than being inside all the time.

We're going in the right direction; the length of the day is already 6-seconds LONGER than it was at it's shortest time.  Pretty soon the Bike Winter Wimps will pump up the tires and come out.

These things work for me:

1) SAD light - I use this one

2) daily dose of Vitamin D supplement (I take a 2000 IU tablet)

3) Getting into winter snow sports has helped me enjoy winter so much that I look forward to it.  I like biking in the winter and cross country skiing.  It doesn't mean I want it to be winter all year round, but when it's here, having a fun reason to get outside and enjoy the fresh air helps with the mood tremendously.

4) Indoor bike trainer for exercise when the weather is too bad to get outside

Also, a winter vacation somewhere warm always helps, if you're able to manage it.  I took my first winter vacation 3 or 4 years ago and vowed that it would be a regular thing.
