6 Riders of Giant-Alpecin Team Hit Head-On in Spain by Motorist Driving the Wrong Way

The British woman who was driving the car has since been charged with reckless driving for driving on the wrong side of the street. She splits her time between Spain and Britain, living in each 6 months of the year.

Six riders—John Degenkolb, Warren Barguil, Ramon Sinkeldam, Fredrik Ludvigsson, Max Walscheid and American Chad Haga—were injured in the head-on collision. Haga suffered extremely serious injuries to his neck and head, and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for surgery. Degenkolb also required surgery after suffering a serious hand injury that almost severed a finger and an injury to his leg. Both Haga and Degenkolb are in stable condition; the other four suffered injuries that were less severe, but Barguil and Walscheid, at least, had wrist, hand, and lower-leg fractures between them.
