The Trib has only the following info:

A 59-year-old woman riding a bicycle was killed by a hit-and-run driver Thursday night in the Bridgeport neighborhood, according to police.

She was in the 2900 block of South Poplar Avenue wen a vehicle struck her about 5:30 p.m. and continued traveling east.

She was pronounced dead at 6:08 p.m., a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said. Her name is being withheld until it's clear that her next of kin has been notified of the death.

No one is custody. The police department's Major Accidents Investigations Unit is looking into the crash.

:-(

I would try tweeting this guy to ask him to follow up, otherwise there may be no updates.

I do not want to derail this serious thread. My condolences to this woman and all who knew her.

I have no issue with the language. Until the robots take over vehicles do what we tell them to do. When the article says the car struck her the clear inference is that the driver controlled the car. The car  indeed was what struck her. Had she been hit by a person, rather than a machine, she may have fared better. Indeed the car struck her and drove away. it did not so so on its own. Had the story been written otherwise it would have been very confusing. Many would have asked, "did the driver get out of his/her car and..."  This does not  just apply to bicycle incidents. The other day a vehicle drove into a Seven Eleven and it was reported as such. The person did not walk in. His/her vehicle drove in.

I agree with you about the use of the word "accident" its not a great word. I notice that traffic reporters use the word "crash" rather than "accident" when describing incidents that may delay traffic.

Very sad.  My condolences to her family and friends.  I hope they find this person.

I have to say, however, that the DNA Info article suffers from the passive language that so many news outlets use when describing these events.  The car did not strike her; the driver struck her with his or her car.  The car did not drive away; the driver unlawfully fled from the scene in his or her car.

At least DNA and the Trib did not call this an accident.

Valid points--  I'm not on Twitface but it shouldn't be hard to communicate them directly to the writer.

Exactly 1 year after Bobby Cann. I am at a loss for words....

The deceased cyclist's name was Suai Xie.  RIP.

More news: the driver has been charged.

Wow.  I am in that area a lot and it's a nice quiet neighborhood for biking.  Especially that block is very quiet as Poplar and many Bridgeport streets in that section are very short (cut off by Stephenson Exp).  At 5:30PM, the sun is still out and the park/baseball diamond is very well used.  I wonder if witnesses came forward or if a camera caught the license plate.

The Trib reports that witnesses took note of the plate numbers.

You are absolutely correct though; Bridgeport is generally very good for cycling, and those diagonal streets typically don't get too busy. I used to live @ 31st and Canal, and didn't ever feel too threatened by crazy drivers.

I've ridden through Bridgeport many times and rarely had an issue with drivers except occasionally on Halsted.

According to the latest Trib update, the driver is being held on $200K bail and ordered to surrender his passport if he posts bail.

Wow, this one sunk to page 3 quickly.

A little follow-up on the victim from DNAinfo.
