Hiya, my bf and I are finally taking a vacation and it's a few days around the 5 Boro Bike Tour in NYC, which we've never done.

Has anyone done this ride and have any advice for us? I'm super excited.

Any other Chainlinkers going this year?

I assume you have already registered for the ride.  I rode it in 2013 with my 17-year-old son.  It was a fantastic ride and we hope to ride it again once he is out of college.  We rented bikes from Bike-and-Roll NYC for the weekend.  They also had a 5 Boro Ride-only special where you got the bikes at the start and leave at the finish in Staten Island.  We were there before the Citi bikes were unveiled, so if we do it again, we may go with this package.  The ride itself is a unique NYC experience, riding on closed streets and expressways.  It is like Bike the Drive - if it also included closing down city streets, the Chicago Skyway, and then a boat ride back from Indiana.  Enjoy!!

Sounds like so much fun, Mark! Thanks!

I have registered - the hard part was finding a bike to rent - all of the official rental bikes through a couple of partners including Bike & Roll were sold out, so I found a local bike shop that let me reserve. Let's hope they remember when I show up the night before for my bike!

Did you have trouble with the no bag/pannier rule? I'm fretting about not being able to carry stuff like water, food, tube, phone without my shoulder bag or pannier.

The rental bike came with a small front bag which was allowed.  Also wear a jersey and/or shorts that have pockets.  There was plenty of fruit and snacks at the rest stops.

Thanks! I will have to bring a front bag or basket.

Sarah:  I did the 5 Boro in 2007.  We arrived a few minutes before the scheduled start time but didnt start moving for almost an hour due to congestion; I dont know if this is still an issue (it was only a problem because it was cold and windy that day).  It was a fun ride and your only opportunity to ride across the Verrazano–Narrows Bridge, the longest bridge span in the Americas.  Enjoy!
