A cyclist was hit and killed by a SUV on the near west side on Saturday night.
The 53 year-old man was riding south on Western Ave around 11:40pm when a blue SUV struck him at the intersection of Western Ave. and Congress Parkway. The SUV's driver was trying to pass the cyclist, police said.
Police say the SUV driver would be cited. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has not yet identified the cyclist. +

The NBC articles says that the police cited the motorist for the general violation of "failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision." The NBC article also has the bicyclist walking his bicycle.

Either way, a very sad event for all involved. That's also the 4th fatality in Illinois involving a bicyclist. Earlier this month Jose Gomez of Des Plaines was killed in a collision with a motor vehicle operated by a United Airlines employee who fled the scene. Jarod Kyle Shumaker of Olive Branch, Illinois was killed when a vehicle did not provide the required 3-Feet of room when passing and clipped the bicyclist sending into traffic. Jack Henderson of Waukegan was also killed in a hit-and-run.
