Cars make way for bikes in transit-oriented housing proposal

"Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to soon introduce changes to the city's transit-oriented development ordinance that would dramatically expand the areas eligible for city incentives and let developers off the hook for parking if they instead make room for bicycles."

Way cool. We should go even further and do what New York City requires for bicycle parking. This is not rocket science and doesn't infringe upon anyone's second amendment rights, either.

Will people be asked to relinquish their unit if they are found to be parking a SUV in the vicinity of their transit-oriented housing unit?

We had a discussion on this at a neighborhood meeting since one is going in my neighborhood (at Roscoe & Southport.  Our neighborhood has permit parking and there was a general concern about the extra parking load a 33 unit building (w 6 parking spaces) would produce.  After wading though most of the BS from the developers, interest groups and alderman.  It came down to this, to appease the neighborhood, people with an address at the new building could not apply for a residential permit, however they can buy daily permits.  Denying a residential permit is solely at the alderman's discretion so knowing how Chicago aldermen work, this carrot was tossed out to appease the masses and probably will be reversed within a year.  My problem is not with the Transit oriented development (as a landlord i will probably be able to significantly increase rent based on the projected apartment rental rates for the development) but because of the continued degradation of Southport with the tear downs and national chain stores.
