so, uhh.. there really isnt much i can do about this. right?

happened on my way home from work today.


the sad thing about it is that i have right around 200 miles on that tire and it wasnt really all that cheap, if you know what i mean..

so, prolly not a good idea to try to boot it or anything?

A boot, often made from a dollar bill, is only to get you home or to a LBS to buy a replacement tire.

yeah i got a nail thru my tire, pretty harshly at that..

hey man, i had a really gnarly pinch flat that that did similar damage actually (tore two places on my tire similar to yours). it was a new, foldable gatorskin so i really didn't want to scrap it. i took an old slick road tire i had lying around that was too old to ride, cut a strip out of the tread (i avoided the sidewall as it was deteriorating and would have caused debris inside the tire) large enough to cover both holes. i used my knife to bevel the edges of the boot i made and bam. i know it probably isn't the best idea (best being to replace it), but i had just gotten it and really didn't want to scrap it. i've had luck with it though. i've been riding it for probably two months now with no sign of problems. it was actually on the bike i took on the dunes trip (140 miles round trip). hope that helps dan.

This thread made a nice companion thread to Jill's green giant thread. If we had the capability we could merge them . . .

I usually avoid tires with recessed grooves like that because they can help 'grab' road debris and give it a chance to dig in with a few revolutions-- the business end of the nail did go right into the recessed groove, although I can't imagine how it got any purchase. Freaky.


I had a very similar puncture to the one pictured on a smooth road tire. The sharp end missed the bead though, and the nail was a smaller diameter. Still using the tire.
