The Chainlink

Hi! Sorry if this has already been posted as a community heads up:

Marathon training for a lot of folks follows a plan leading up to a 20 miler training run usually 3-4 weeks before the big race. CES (Chicago endurance sports/fleet feet folks) are doing their big group run out of the Old Town store. CARA (Chicago area runners association) is doing it on Sunday starting round Montrose. I'm not certain on the CES, but CARA uses the LFP. For those who have never witnessed this, it can be a lot of folks running and trying to stay in tight groups that are going to be wider than normal.

Funny thing, I didn't see any happy reminders on the path today or yesterday like I did for other races/events. Did any of you? So training, commuting, Chi-lacing rides might be impacted. Sorry if everyone knows this and I didn't see it already posted somewhere.

Oh and for the record - I have drank from the kool aid fountain of running marathons and ultras, so for full disclosure I may be running on the path as well. And last year, I think I saw Serge volunteering. (Without a beer in hand, crazy)
Bring it on! Runners Critical Mass! Chicago's Marathon is Sunday October 12th, 7am. I invite all from the cycling community, if you have never experienced the festivities and exuberance of our city's marathon, try it out one time. Bring your bike out along the route to watch the spectacle and see if it doesn't rub off on you. Just sayin ' ! And once again, heads up on LFP this weekend, sorry.

CARA's run on Sunday morning will have the most impact, all training members across their various locations and even non members sign up for this run. It starts at Montrose, heads north a bit then all the way south to the end of the LFP. Highly recommend alternatives if you're heading south.

About what time do they do this? Do they put any infrastructure on/near the path (e.g., water stations, corrals, fences, electrical cords, etc.)?

What kind of density is this? Are we talking well-organized clumps of 10-20 runners every 30 yards or so, or is it more like "Corporate-Sponsored Walk for the Cure of Childhood Disease" events, which are basically impassable?

Thanks for the heads up.  I intended to take ride to brunch on the LFP - Andersonville to Pilsen.  That would have made for a bad ride.  Thanks again!

I believe the first wave starts around 630 AM, with waves every couple minutes. Besides lots of infrastructure around the start at Montrose and the end at Jackson Park, there is not much brought in along the path. There will be water stops, but its likely the same ones used every weekend, managed by Fleet Feet that are mostly off the path itself, such as by the boathouse and along the inner dirt path between Belmont and North Ave.

These are relatively serious runners as opposed to walking events, but the organization of each wave is up to the volunteer pacers and runners that make up that particular group, particularly as the miles drag on.

There are 8 aid stations. Here is a link to their map. (For Sunday)

The event is organized so that faster pace groups go first. The bulk will be between 9:30 mm and 10:30 minute miles. 20 miles at a 10:00 pace is 3hr and 20 m. Start of this group just before 7. The route is all south, so most will be over before 11. Yaj, I'd probably still take Clark, but timing might work out for you to take the lfp.
