A friend of mine just had her bike stolen. Right out of her garage! Now I cannot say if a neighbor left it open or etc... but I really don't like people who steal and I am hoping that we can keep an eye out for a 2013 Trek 7.6fx (purple). Stolen over the last few days (she was out of town) from the area of Belmont and Lincoln. Picture attached.

Our 2 bikes were stolen out of our garage last night in the same area! Garage was closed and locked though, no signs of damage, nothing else stolen but our nice bikes.  Someone totally cased our place and knew they were there!  Be wary of people suspiciously walking down alleys or cars cruising through/parked illegally in the alley.  I've noticed early morning vans cruising down the past few months.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! New 2013 black men's Cannondale Synapse 6 Tiagra (white lettering, drop bars, LED front/rear lights) and satin cherry red 2010 women's Trek 7.5 FX WSD (white lettering, flat bars, rear fender only, LED front/rear lights).  Police report filed; listed on Chicago Stolen Bike, Bike Index, SBR Chicago (Twitter), Find Stolen Bikes (FB); insurance notified.

Any other avenues to try?

It seems like everywhere is getting hit hard the moment. Lock them up tight.

Here's a list of things to do, if you haven't already:

File a police report(311)
chicago.stolenbike.org
stolen.bikeindex.org/stolen/
Twitter
EveryBlock
Facebook (Join/monitor/post to these groups)
Maxwell St. Market
Swap-O-Rama (I was told Thursday is best)
Create flyers and distribute them.
Email Bike Shops.
Create Google Alerts.

Lincoln Park/Lakeview seems to be getting hit very hard with this type of theft at the moment.

It does sound like we are in the peak of evil bike thief season. Yes, a neighborhood watch for any type of misbehavior is good thing, if you have good neighbors. A couple of years back, the neighbors and I interrupted a small team of thieves who were scouting the back yards and porches for bikes that were "cable" locked or not locked at all. Yes, lock them up tight, even for a short 'minutes' return. Don't be over confident that you live in a secure building or surroundings and let your guard down. And if you see a 'kid' in your neighbors yard and he says he's waiting for his friend "John Doe", check it out then call 911.

Reports to the CSBR typically peak in July, but remain fairly robust in August. More bikes. More bike thefts. If it's any consolation, July 2014 reports were down more than 20% as compared to the July 2013 total.

CBS news has been hitting the stolen bike resources hard for material (video, pics and locations of sucker poles) They must be putting together a "how to" video on where and how to steal and fence a bike

Or maybe they actually care and want to warn people.....I could be wrong.
