The Chainlink

Just caught this little bastard trying to steal a front tire of a bike at Albany and Logan. Made him reattach the wheel and took his wrench. A little too young to punch in the mouth. He rides an all black fixie with shorty straight bars. Lock em up tight.

I want to thank everyone for sharing this around CL and FB.

And David M., I am not a scorned lover nor a wronged business partner. I just saw a theft in progress and tried to get a stranger's front wheel back. I posted his pick so if anyone sees him around a bike rack or just some bike on a street post at a corner, maybe they will take a moment to chase him off.

At least 50 new chainlink members because of this thread. Maybe it should be a weekly feature?

Which is kind of fucked up, in my opinion. The police were notified of what, exactly?? That a kid someone knows looks like a kid in a picture taken by an anonymous guy who said that the kid was trying to steal a wheel but was interrupted before he could? At least it's just information being passed over to police instead of people harassing him or worse. But still, there's nothing solid to work off of here.

That said, I agree and appreciate your plea for others to avoid violence.

Absolutely. I meant no offense and I never truly believed you to be a scorned lover or a wronged business parter, I just had to offer another perspective. Like I said, I have no reason not to believe you, and I actually do.

What you did, in my opinion, is totally reasonable and very much appreciated because you were just saying "hey here's a jerk who tries to steal bike parts so keep an eye out" to what is presumably a somewhat tight-knit community without the intention of it spreading elsewhere. It was the other overenthusiastic internet detectives who took it too far, in my opinion.

Attempted robbery could be the charge.  With a witness and a picture they might serve a search warranty and then if they find any thing they deem stolen in his possession they can get more charges against him.

Just because someone didn't complete the crime, doesn't mean a crime wasn't committed.

The kid had already removed the wheel and got on his bike. I chased after him and was able to stop the girl that was with him. He returned a minute later and asked me to let her go. I told him to get off his bike, reattach the wheel and then I took his wrench so he couldn't just ride around the block after I was gone. The kids looked young, so I snap his picture put a little scare into them. I didn't think your comment offensive, just found humour in it.

I recognized him right away and know him to be a minor and come from a dysfunctional family. I also see him and his friends on bikes they couldnt possibly afford around my neighborhood and have long suspected they were theives. I've never had a reason to call the police until now.

I called the 25th District desk, pointed them to the story online, gave them his name and address. I also gave my name and phone number if they wanted to hear more.

You physically detained a teenaged girl?

I held her bike. Never touched either one of them. My wife can attest to that.

Does anyone else suspect that young Matt is thinking that this 15 minutes of fame is the best thing that's ever happened to him?

Much more likely that he's scared senseless.

Yeah, this isn't like the triple rainbow guy or someone like that, this is a thief that was caught in the act.  He knows his mug is out there and people will be wary of him.

There should be a Chicago Most "Wanted" bike thief page......would be interesting to see who would end up there.
