Last year, a customer wanted their Legacy bike built up with SRAM's 2 speed automatic hub. She rode it the rest of the summer - but came to me this spring wondering if it could be adjusted. It was shifting too soon and she wanted to cruise more before it shifted.
Low and behold there are a couple of sets of instructions on how to adjust it online(probably voiding the warrantee) and those were simple to implement.
She now has her modified rear wheel and is loving it. It is a great, simple version of a 2 speed hub, and with this modification - fits her needs well.
Thought I would give an update.

... there is such a thing as an automatic hub?
Yeah, Its the same basic gear ratio change as the Sturmey Archer 2 Speed kickback - but instead of having to kickback to shift, it does it for you at a particular speed.
It's pretty cool.

Happy customer chiming in...the modification to the hub is GREAT. So much better. I originally chose the SRAM 2-speed because many years ago I had an old Schwinn with a 2-speed kick back that I loved. I figured new technology would be better, right? The Automatix is better - no thinking, it just switches gear when you get to a certain mph. The problem was that as installed out of the box, I found it shifting after only 5-6 stokes of the pedals. Way too soon. With the adjustment, I really have to get going to switch into overdrive. And it automatically goes back to low gear when you stop . One thing to note - it will on occasion jump to high gear if you hit a rough patch - which as we all know is a particular problem in Chicago this year. Otherwise thumbs up on this hub - voided warranty and all.
