I won't mind if it warms up to the 20s. ;-) And I thought about taking the subway this morning but remembered that I would have to walk four blocks and be miserable while I could ride my bike three miles and be only slightly miserable.

It would appear that in two short years Lisa has progressed from neophyte to hardcore. ;-)

I bow to you Lisa. I thought about it and just could not pull the trigger. Of course, I go a little farther, but still, you were tougher than I. I hope a nice hot toddy awaits you for your return home on Christmas Eve.

I took the short way, so only three miles and only a thumb got cold.  I don't think I would have done it if I had seven or eight miles to ride.

Excuses, excuses...

Why does riding the bus or the subway make one miserable?

I suppose I don't have the association with the "daily grind" that you guys do since I ride CTA primarily for recreation.... but I think it's fun most of the time.

It is not riding the subway that makes me miserable, although it does not make me happy.  It is walking four blocks in the bitter cold that seems (to me) more miserable than riding a bike three miles in the bitter cold.

CTA, maybe not miserable.  But, on my bike I don't have the guy next to me or behind me sneezing and coughing all over the place.  This time of year = many people doing that.  On my bike I don't the people on chatting on their cell phones like the person on the other end cannot hear.  On my bike I don't have the smell of the baby that needs to be changed (or the drunk adult that needs to be changed...).

To put it another way, being on my bike makes me that much happier!

I ride buses and trains all the time and these things certainly happen, but not every ride, or every other ride, or even much more than about once a month. I guess maybe it depends to some extent on where you live/ which buses or trains you ride?

Probably.  Red line between Sheridan & Loop these things are a regular occurrence.

Man! it was brutal out there tonight. (Christmass eve.)  I was riding south from Rogers Park to Humbolt park, after a Christmass party.  I was fighting a suprisingly strong headwind. The snow and Ice were blowing into my face, and it was very cold.  I was bemoaning the fact that I had nothing to do on Christmas day.  I usualy go to Indiana to visit my mother, but she died earlier this year, and my father died  a long time ago.  All this was going through my mind, when, at the intersection of California and Milwauke, a homeless man flagged me down.  He was cold, and hungry and had no place to go.  He asked me for some money.  I realised that this man was having a much worse Christmas than I was.  I at least have a warm bed to sleep in.  I dug in my pocket and gave him every coin I had, about four bucks worth.  Then I continued on with my struggle South.

Good for you.
