As the title suggest, I thought we could use this thread as a way to post open invitation training rides. This Sunday, I'm doing a lakefront ride:
Map: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5841901
Start: Buckingham Fountain
End: Buckingham Fountain
Start Time: 9am
End Time: 11:30-noon-ish
Pace: I'd like to keep around a 14-18 mph pace
Description:
It's just simply riding the lakefront in it's entirety. It equates to about 36 miles + whatever miles it'll take to get to Buckingham and back (for me 42 total miles). Weather looks like crap for Sunday (chance of rain - 40 degrees) - from my experience training for marathons, I've found crappy conditions only make me stronger.

I'm going for a ride tomorrow - planning to go to the Gardens via the NBT and then further north, maybe Ft. Sheridan, if I have enough time (I need to reserve a block of the afternoon for car work...) Not sure when I leave, but it won't be before late morning since I'll be up late (by my standards) tonight. If you want to come along, let me know. I'll check this thread again before I go to bed, and in the morning.
I'm in, can I meet you in the city or are you in the burbs? I was suppose to ride 120 miles into Indiana today, but my bees came in this morning (Saturday) and it's one of those drop everything and get them into the hive events. So...yeah, I'm in Chicago. I'd like to be back before 2pm if possible. PM me and I can meet you where-ever.
Well, my experience was very disappointing. I DNF'd due to missing the second control (Plano) by 15 minutes. Eric graciously told me I could carry on if I thought I could make up the time over the next 3 controls, but there was no way I could do so in that wind. Actually, I'm surprised how vicious gusts can be as they howl across the barren and empty fields out in the country. What started out as 16 mph, gusting to 22 mph ended up being 22 gusting to 30 as I got close to the Plano control. Yikes.
Big thumbs up to Joe and Yao, who may be finished, or may be on the course still. We made the first control with minutes to spare, so I'm hoping they made it up and then some to finish strong.
I'm pretty dejected, but I'm definitely going to attempt the course again in slightly warmer weather!
Jim, don't be too discouraged - the conditions were tough today. I saw Yao and Joe about 20 minutes ahead of you, and they seemed to be doing OK. Joe was actually pretty enthusiastic and sounded confident they would finish under the time limit, although he was concerned about getting back in time for the 8PM train.
After my ride of 62 miles I was outside doing yard work all afternoon, and although the sun did come out, it never warmed up that much, and every time I felt that west wind I thought of the riders still out there, hopefully with a tail wind some of the time coming back from Ottawa.

Hey Jim, if it will make you feel any better, I too DNF`d FVP once, S wind instead of W, otherwise similar. And the funny thing is; the forecast was just fine the day before the ride, and it changed dramatically overnight. Oh well. I suffered on some Delavan 200Ks, but none was as bad as that FVP :)
Well, misery loves company, right? Ha.
I've been reading about being successful while riding into wind, but most things just simplify it to "hunker down, get small, and spin". I guess I need to learn how to mash harder in to the wind.
Nice. Good job to you guys, man.

Joe and I finished at 8on. Tried to grab the 8:33 but train was full of other riders from Aurora.
