Classic example of why the Tribune is a rag. It puts up a headline that makes it sound as if Caribou Coffee is completely leaving Chicago....then you read the article and realize that most downtown chicago stores are actually remaining open.
Don't hate The Trib. More than just a coffee chain has said they'd pull out and didn't.

Before we had Intelligentsia or the Bridgeport Coffeehouse and a bunch of other awesome indie coffeeshops I would occasionally ride to Evanston to get coffee at Peets. About half the time I would remember my fondness for Cafe Express (RIP) and not make it as far as Peets. I've never had anything against Caribou, but they were never either awesome enough or convenient enough for me to care about them much. And now it seems Peets is also just another chain sending profits out of our local economy. Just say no! (uh except I might try a cup from the new Peets on Monroe, just to see if it is still any good.)
Support your local indie if you can!
I havn't gone to a single coffee shop since my package from amazon arrived.

We in Milwaukee will be losing five shops, the only two surviving will be on Blue Mound and Mayfair Roads in Wauwatosa and a location in Pewaukee. They not only have competition from Starbucks, but local competitors like Alterra, Anodyne, Cedarburg, Stone Creek, and Sven's.

Some of the Caribou employees--soon to be ex-employees--have put up a Facebook page, in an effort to try and track the closings, as well as commiserate, plan closing parties and everything else. These folks needed to organize before this; a union may have been able to negotiate more than the measly one week's severance they are reportedly receiving. No word yet if the rebranded Caribou-->Peet's will use the same employees or force everyone to start at the bottom again by reapplying for their old jobs.
