The Chainlink

I just missed the press conference and just hung out at lunch to see how it would all work. It seemed easy enough, so I took Dearborn as my starting route home to Roscoe Village. Normally I hit Franklin to Orleans then north to Lincoln.

I have to say, it was pretty easy and relatively safe. The ambassadors were helpful with the the auto traffic. The walkers were easy enough to avoid. I had to chuckle at two riders riding side by side in the lane.

What I didn't see was any oncoming traffic; southbound riders. I am guessing that will come in time or at other times during the day.

Way to go Mayor RE! This is really making a statement.

Who else rode the new path?

I'm back to riding again after my crash on the Dearborn bridge that icy Monday two weeks back and all I could think this morning was, "Well those plates look a lot more comfortable to crash on."

The noise the plates make is pretty awesome. The plates on Wells made a cool noise, too.

For some reason, I also love the sound that the new AC motors on the 5000-series 'L' cars make.

I think it is really finished (except for all of the fixing of pavement and drainage).  The plastic bollards are up all the way across the bridge.

You know... I was in the STL area for the long weekend. It was at least 15· warmer this this Crap here... Ha!

So I think it is safe to assume CDOT will not be plating the smaller grate just south of Wacker?

There is a similar grate on Wells just south of Wacker.  It was never covered.  I assume it's a vent of some sort for Lower Wacker or the Red Line (or similar).  That would suggest the small grate on Dearborn won't be covered either.  Hit it straight on, stop pedaling, and coast over it... :-)

I would be surprised if they do.  That is not a bridge, of course, and I suspect it is ventilation for something underground.  Fortunately it is a short distance and I find I usually can ride around it even heading north.

If that grate is indeed ventilation, then it won't be covered up, since that would defeat the purpose of the vent. Luckily, it is fairly easily avoidable.
