PURPOSE AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Active Transportation Alliance, a non-profit advocacy group, manages a city-funded education and encouragement program called the City of Chicago’s Bicycling Ambassadors. The Bicycling Ambassadors teach motorists and bicyclists to better share city streets. They do this by speaking face-to-face to members of the public. Teams of Ambassadors deliver bicycling expertise personally in demonstrations and conversations in public places, at community events and to children at summer day camps.

BICYCLING TEST
We require candidates selected for interview to successfully complete a bicycling road test prior to the interview. Candidates must bring their own bicycles and helmets.

Be Part of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Plan To Make Chicago The Most Bicycle Friendly City in the Country!
Help design Chicago’s on-street bikeways. The City of Chicago will be establishing approximately 100 miles of new protected bike lanes and other innovative bike facilities over the next four years. Help design these bikeways, upgrade existing ones, and implement new treatments. Work will be carried out at the Chicago Department of Transportation’s downtown offices and in the field throughout Chicago.
STARTING SALARY: $10.00 - $14.00/hour contingent on level of education.
TASKS: Preparing construction plans using CADD software; simulating existing and proposed traffic conditions; conducting detailed field surveys to collect geometric, traffic, parking, and land use data needed for bikeway designs; identifying required upgrades to existing bikeways; construction inspection and supervision; assisting the bikeways team with other tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Enrolled in an accredited engineering program.
- Enthusiasm and initiative to improve bicycling conditions in Chicago.
- Experience with CADD software (MicroStation or equivalent).
- Ability to work independently, efficiently, and cooperatively.
- High attention to detail.
- Comfortable, able, and willing to bicycle on Chicago streets throughout all regions of the city.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Exposure to ArcGIS a plus.
HOURS & TERM: Tentative start date: February 25th, 2013
Part-time during spring semester. Full-time employment over summer break.
