This is on the south side of Diversey as you enter the parking lot for the golf range that sits on the north side of Diversey Harbor on the west side of Lake Shore Drive

Yup. Barely any warmer than this morning, and I will have the wind in my face all the way home. Not looking forward to it.

This morning was ok if you were going with the wind.  But today was the kind of Chicago cold that tends to get under your skin, latches onto your bones with its icy hooks, and makes you think about the trip home in a few hours with a particular cloudy dread.

Or make you wonder if the summers in Phoenix can possibly be that hot. :-)

Had a good ride home. Seriously, on bike or Red Line/Bus? No contest here!

Yeah, it was better than expected. Meandered my way up to Lincoln Square. Ended up riding through a bunch of alleys to avoid salmoning.

I've haven't driven my cars in almost 30 days.  I invested in a Sirius balaclava during the REI winter sale, some wool socks, fleece socks on top of that, ski gloves, wool liner gloves,  a cotton long sleeve shirt, a fleece jacket on top of that, plus ski goggles.  I commute to Melrose park from Noble Square and back.  No issues other than I need a head light for the darkness my current light is totally inadequate.  When it was in the 40s, I didn't wear the balaclava and felt much colder than now. It's all about the layers, no need to spend a lot of money and you can ride comfortably in the 20's - 30's

Riding every day. Been layering with a nice waterproof "windbreaker" type of jacket (that Willow nicely added some reflective strips to the bottom and the cuffs...THANKS, WILLOW ! You are a lifesaver !!!) Gonna see about crafting up some "booties" to keep my shoes warm (& dry). I need to get a few sets of wool socks sometime soon. My 5.11 socks are not the best for bike riding in this weather, but they'll do for now.

Just added a Nebo 1xAA flashlight to my helmet (via some creative use of velcro) to add some additional lighting towards the front (since my "flashlight" keeps twisting down and just highlighting about 5-10 feet in front of my tire). Just a little added lighting.

For those of you still out and riding, I try to wave to everyone, and say good morning, have a great day, etc...any time I see y'all riding.

See y'all out there !

Manny

My best investments for winter riding have been " bar mitts "
And
Smart wool socks
And
Waterproof hiking shoes
I second the recommendation for bar mitts. I wear smart wool year round as well. Dump the cotton socks in the winter.

Good ride in today.  The wind makes for some cutting chills, but I still like the ride in!

A very nice morning, but why does the wind in winter seem windier than the wind in summer?
