I confronted him and he said that he lost his key, so he went and bought a Sawzall to cut off the u-lock. Sawzall's cost about $110. You can get a Peugeot at Working Bikes for $160. I took a picture of him. IMG_20120723_183214.jpg
He rode off and tossed the lock into the garbage compactor. I flagged down a police officer. The police officer explained to me that the guy probably wasn't a bike thief because most bike thieves are black.
I left my contact information with him, but the officer explained that I couldn't file a report since it wasn't my bike that was stolen. If you know someone who is missing a Blue Peugeot that was locked in front of Ogilvie, tell that person to file a police report.

Hahahaha.
Nice job keeping an eye out and investigating. I guess only time will tell if his story was legit or not.
Nice thumb.
When I lived in Baltimore, I once came home to find a man in my house. The 911 operator, upon hearing this, asked, "is he black or hispanic?" She seemed stump when I told her he was white and wearing a yarmulke.
Hmm, why steal a used Peugeot when you can steal a nicer bike for all the trouble of carrying around a sawzall. I think this guy is legit. I need a sawzall, I would absolutely go buy one if I lost the keys and my 69 racer commuter was locked up.
I call legit as well. Although I wish there was a Cody Wolcott patrolling every block of the city.
I am assuming that he used a battery powered sawzall, which cost a bit more than $110 bucks...
Unless he opted for a Ryobi Home owner special in which case he would have gone thru 5 batteries to cut the lock...
Yes, Yes I do.
I have worked in construction for over 25 years... :P
Chuck's right on here. I used my Ryobi portable angle grinder to help someone who needed a U-lock cut off a few months ago, and let's just say if video of it had ended up on Youtube I would have been willing to pay a modest fee to have it taken down due to embarrassment...

You know that from experience Chuck? ;)
