Quinn to unveil $1.6 billion in transportation projects

Other major projects in the city that can now be put out for bid include the estimated $22.5 million overhaul of the Wells Street Bridge over the Chicago River, almost $3 million in engineering for a 35th Street bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Lake Shore Drive and vaulted sidewalks and accessible ramps on portions of Michigan Avenue and State Street.

Ummm, why spend 3 mil on a bike bridge at 35th when ya can access the path at 31st?

I'm not sure, from the information in the project spreadsheet from the Governor's Office, that the cost for the 35th Street bike/ped includes construction. It may just be design, but I know the bridge was part of a design competition for bike/ped bridges on the south Lakefront Trail.

Why make people walk or ride an extra half mile when you can replace an existing bridge with a better and safer one?

It's 3 mil for the engineering... There is already a ped bridge there so ya do not have to walk a 1/2 mile... Biking an extra 1/2 mile takes what 2 minutes... How about using that money to reinstate the 31st St. Bus...

Take a look at the ped bridge that's there now. It could use a replacement. It's rusting and uncomfortable to use because it feels like you're in a cage.
