Anyone know how and where to recycle bike tires and tubes?

I received the following today:

> I'm planning on attending the expo this weekend and was wondering if you
> were accepting old worn-out bike tires and tubes (none of them useable
> any longer) for recycling.  The tubes have been cut into smaller pieces
> (such as lengths of 12 inches) because at the time I did that, I didn't
> think the valves were recyclable.  I now know that tubes are more
> recyclable when left whole.  Please let me know--I have a hefty bag full
> of tubes and a few dozen tires and would be very happy to keep them out
> of the waste stream if possible--

I know this comes up now and then but I usually lose interest after the third time someone erroneously declares that Working Bikes wants them, and I guess if there's an answer I never hear it.

Thanks for any info-- told the guy I'd research it and get back to him.

Subject: NEED HELP NOW!! to kill a bill that will have Illinois subsidize tire-burning!!! Sens Munoz/Sandoval

We are trying to kill a bill (SB 380) that would give renewable energy credits and subsidies to any plant that burns tires!

PLEASE LET OTHERS KNOW

We need your state senator to vote against the bill

The bill was voted down in the Illinois Senate late Tuesday, but the sponsors are reviving it today for a “do over” vote and are trying hard to more senators to vote for it.

(fact sheet attached)

BUT Senator Munoz and Senator Sandoval voted YES on Tuesday !!! (pro–tire burning!!!)

They need to vote NO today!

…or at least vote PRESENT on the bill today (which is just as good as a NO in helping to kill the bill)

There is a tire-burning facility in the south suburbs ( Ford Heights ) that wants this ‘green energy’ subsidy and they are under heavy pressure to vote yes on the bill. If they get subsidies to burn tires for electricity – then ANYONE can and we could see a bunch of new tire burning power plants popping up. This would also mean less state assistance for clean wind and solar energy sources!

PLEASE spread the word and get calls into the Senators offices!

Senator Munoz 217-782-9415 773-869-9050

Senator Sandoval 217-782-5304 708-656-2002

i was at mox today (halsted and randolph) and asked if they recycled tubes and tires. nope. it sounds like it's too difficult. so i took my tube and tire to add to my closet. mox is a great shop, but it seems like many bike shops don't know a good way to recycle tube and tires.

i see the burning tire issue; legislation news which i recieve from the ISEC newsletter. burning tires is not good.

just my observation: being "green" seems to be difficult in chicago. there are a lot of "old dogs" to train." to me it seems like bike shops and the city need a very easy option. from what i've seen and heard, like at mox, if it's not super easy or motivated by money, people seem to not care about what goes into the waste stream. and it's not that they may not care, but they just don't know 1) how bad not recycling is, and 2) how to recycle such as tubes and tires.

keep up the search for a good alternative to throwing tubes and tires in the landfill. i appreciate this post. if i find anything, i'll let you know.
what if we did something like Pee Wee Herman and his foil ball:))
i like the idea of recycling rubber for surfaces, but there are some hazards to consider:
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2009/06/05/epa_rethinks_...

I remember in the 1990s there was talk of using recycled tires in road surfaces, because it would help prevent potholes and cracks from the freeze/thaw cycle. the rubber would allow for a little expansion and contraction. I can't believe Chicago doesn't recycle tires for this purpose. I'll write to the city.

I called to find out where Performance routes the tubes and the PR gal didn't have exact info but said it's a partnership with Liberty Tire-- we may have got our first solid lead in the tube recycling quest :-)

FYI, picked up from the listosphere:

Hi,

I am a local jewe lry artist and my medium is bicycle inner tubes.  I have been lucky to be able to ask Barnard Schwinn to save tubes for me when I need them.  Unfortunately I am running out of my favorite size tubes and am wondering if your group could assist me.  They are the narrower road bike tubes that most cyclists change on their own.  I would really appreciate if you would consider sharing a request for blown tubes with your members.  I would love to recycle them and am willing to pick them up from a front porch or wherever.

Thank you for your consideration,
Marci Battersby

REI works with Alchemy Goods http://www.alchemygoods.com/recycling-faq.html to collect bicycle tubes for recycling. They need to meet the standards listed on the website above. If you have questions, or need to arrange for large quantity feel free to contact me at elbenne@rei.com

Thanks!

update...

was in Performance Bikes tonight (halsted/diversey) and noticed they had a blue recycling bin by the door filled with tires and tubes.  I asked the manager and he affirmed they have a corporate agreement with Liberty Tire to recycle them and it was free of charge for anybody to drop them off.  He said they were getting ready to send out a big shipment of them next week.

I dont know about anybody else but I will be dumping off a very large bag tomorrow..
