I'm riding the LTDS for the first time evah and I'm looking for tips.
What, beyond the necessities, should I bring for camping? Food, drink, snacks or can you get things nearby?
Is there any place near the campground to ride to or does everyone just kind of hang around the park?

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
Vince

I've decided that I'm just bringing some fruit for the first day and a crapload of granola bars.  With the SAG stops and the provided meals that will do me.  It's only 2 days.  I've got my tent, bag, pad, lounge clothes/sandals, and second-day riding clothes in a small duffel.  What more do I need?

I'll have my typical day-trip riding gear in my handlebar bag.  I think I'll bring one pannier for a 2-quart canteen for extra water.  I'll stuff that full of some of the crap when I pick up my duffel for the way home from downtown after they drop us off at the end of Day 2, and strap the rest of the duffel to the back rack with a bungie net that I'll bring along.  It's only 6 miles or so from the drop-off point.

That should more than do me I think.  this is a supported 2-day tour.  No need to go nuts carrying everything and the kitchen sink.

The question I'm dealing with is whether to keep my milk crate on or take it off my rear rack. I'm leaning toward taking it off since I purchased a handlebar bag for my wallet, phone, small camera maybe a small snack...the 1.5 liters of water in the bottle cages which should last the 20 miles between sag stops.

In my checked bag, I'm still considering packing my camp pot/alcohol stove and some fuel for a cup of joe before we head out in the morning  as it weighs in the neighborhood of 10oz in total and packs down to almost nothing.

I suppose I can do 20 miles between SAG stops without a half-gallon of water.  That would save a TON of weight.

Come to think of it, I'm riding to the start so even if I check a bag I'll need to get it back home at the end. I better plan accordingly.

Hey James were you at the M&M ride Sunday? I saw you responded to that thread.

Yes I was.  It was a fine ride, wasn't it?

I've got one checked back which is a small duffel about 12" in diameter and 24" long -with all my camping gear & spare clothes.  I'll be hauling it down to the Bucktown Pub at 658 West Cortland Ave between 7 & 9 after I get back from the MBAC meeting tomorrow.   That will give me a few more commuting miles to log for Team Independent for the B2WW competition.

This might be a dumb question, but do we need to carry a lock on us while riding? Or can we just check it with our bag? I figure we'll pretty much be with our bikes the entire time until we reach our destination on Friday afternoon....maybe someone who's made this ride before can chime in?

Edit: sorry for the kinda weird "we"...it's not an imaginary friend I swear...I'm riding with my brother.

+1 -this is a great question.

I was planning on packing my lock or taking it on the bike.  I usually carry it with me when I ride but I figured, as you did, that nobody is going to steal a bike at a SAG stop.   But on Day2 breakfast is on your own at a restaurant so maybe it would be a good idea to bring it along with the bike just in case.

My ride lock is a wimpy On-Guard U-lock that weight barely more than a pound.  It's cheesy, but it is much better than nothing.

P.S.  I didn't think the "we" was weird at all.  But coming from me that probably doesn't mean much.

I had a blast this weekend at Le Tour de Shore.    Here is my photo dump of all my raw pictures.

That's an awesome picture of all the cyclists and the city.

I think perhaps the only two bicycles on the ride that had dynohubs.  There may have been another -but I didn't see it.

Now those are some fine looking bicycle machines.
