I signup for the Share the road bicycle plate back in Nov, having paid my $17 fee. I guess in Feb or march they got the required 1500 commitment, will start making the plates. I got a letter in early april from  Secretary of State, that as soon as I pay, they will start mailing on April 30th. I paid $133 for plate renewal with additional fee for the Share the road plate. My problem is, my plates expired on April 30th, I am now driving on expired plates. I need my car for work, I bike to work normally, except since April 30th, it was forecasted rain every day in coming days too, so I need my car.

Has anyone who signed up, gotten their plates? Also how can find out my status with the plates. what will the police do?, I normally don't have police behind me, but last week 3 of those days, I had a police car behind, maybe lucky that they were probably getting ready to go home.

I have no proof to show, and my check has yet to be cashed. Plus my exhaust just got a hole in it and is making a lot of noise, possablie attracting police.

any tips would be helpful... thanks in advance......Jerry

I sent in my additional $ in mid-April and haven't received the plates yet, either. I just asked for a random number, not vanity. They didn't indicate how long the process would take. Since I just got a new annual sticker in March, there's no real rush for me, but you might want to call the League of Illinois Bicyclists, or the IL Secretary of State's offices, due to your expired plates to ask about timing.

From bikelib.org:

Share the Road Plate Delivery Details

"Share the Road" Specialty License Plate(Updated May 2, 2012)

The Secretary of State’s office today provided LIB with an update regarding the new “Share the Road” specialty plate for Illinois cars, vans, and light trucks.  As of today, the new plates are scheduled to be sent starting May 11.

The 1500+ people who earlier submitted their reservation form and $17 fee will receive their plates first.  On April 6, the State mailed each a letter and form to complete their order, with a due date of completing the order by April 30.  This second part of the two-step purchase process costs $34 for random, four-digit numbers starting with 1001, or more for vanity and personalized plates.  The letter does not make it clear that you should include a check to “Secretary of State” for the appropriate amount, when you mail back your form.  Also, the quoted prices on the letteralready take into account the $17 you paid earlier, so do not subtract $17 from the appropriate amount.

Those who sent in their form and requested a random number will start receiving plates just after May 11.  Those who sent in their form and requested a personalized or vanity plate will start receiving theirs two weeks after that.  Starting May 15, those who have not already reserved plates may purchase them online through the Secretary of State’s website, for the entire $51 (more for personalized and vanity) in one step.

The new plates will deliver a “Share the Road, Same Rights – Same Rules” message while raising funds for LIB’s motorist and bicyclist education efforts.  One such project is early development of innovative, online quiz-based “certifications” meant to more broadly deliver bike safety knowledge in schools, drivers’ education, and the general population.

LIB receives $17 of the first year’s $51 incremental cost for the plates and $20 of the additional $22 fee in renewing years.

We urge plate customers not to let thick license plate frames – such as those from car dealers – cover the plate design and message.  This can be done by not using any frames, or picking narrow frames – such as a new “Share the Road with Bicyclists – Same Rights, Same Rules” frame offered by LIB.

Learn more about getting your plates or frames on our “Share the Road” specialty license plate webpage.

Thank you Andrew N for the info,  I guess, I'll sweat it out till May 11th.

Michelle stenzel, I will go to the the secretary of states office today and check with them on my situation. I also only ask for random number too. On the form, that they sent in April, it said if plates expired within 90 days to sent $133 I should just gone ahead and purchased the sticker, instead of waiting for it with the plates.

I'll be checking the mail daily.   thanks everyone....Jerry

Jerry,

As Andrew mentioned, plates are now expected to go out after May 11. We had expected the plates to already be on cars by this point; but, the Secretary of State has had some unanticipated delays with the process. I have not received my plate or had my check cashed yet either. I would recommend that you keep a copy of the letter from the Secretary of State's office in your vehicle. That way if you are stopped by the police you can show them that you have a new plate and sticker arriving.

We are posting updates on our website and on our Facebook page as we receive them. Feel free to also contact me at gina@bikelib with any questions. Thanks for signing up for the plate and, hopefully, they will be on cars very soon!

Gina K. thanks.....I already have the letter in my car, like you mentioned, hope police would understand, had a couple police car on my rear last week, was ready to use the letter, but they sped away, what a relief.

I went to secretary of state's special services today, the lady said I should renew now and when they cash the check for the share the road plates, I can get a refund, she also gave me a refund form.

I need to get home tonight after, and hopefully if Tuesday and Wednesday is rainless, I will ride my bike to work, and I am carless till Monday.

I know I am the only one concerned, but did the share the road plates get mailed out May 11th , as suggested. I am currently running on expired plates for the past 2 weeks. secretary of state wanted me to pay full plus penalty of past date of May 1st and get a refund later . As long as weather is nice like today, I'll the 16 miles to work, coming home around 4am. Hope they are in the mail...   Jerry

I wouldn't trust a "refund".

I don't know if they were mailed, but I haven't received mine yet. I'll post when I do.

I have not received mine yet. I will get an update from LIB executive director Ed Barsotti and post it here.

The Secretary of State's office started mailing plates with random numbers on May 11, as far as we know but we do not know their exact process. It did take them longer to process the reservation forms than they anticipated so it is quite likely that it is taking them longer to have the plates mailed out than they anticipated. We have not heard from anyone yet saying that they have received their plates. I am guessing that someone will post a photo on our Facebook page or on The Chainlink when that occurs.

Refunds for people with 2 plates (this is hardly uncommon so I would not worry too much, except regarding how much time it takes)

Yes, post when you receive them.  I believe my dad ordered one.

If he didn't, can we order one for father's day?
