Hey,
I recently purchased a bike online that needs to be assembled. Since I am not to knowledgeable about bikes, I think the safest bet is to have a bike shop put it together. Any suggestions for what bike shop to go to? I spoke with one shop and got a quote of $55-$65 and was hoping it could be done for less. Thanks!

Do you have any interest in doing it yourself but in a bike shop if you are looking to save money? If so West Town Bikes and Recyclery have open shop.
Go to the nearest reputable shop to where you live or work. Cough up the dough and keep it in mind next time a bike looks like it is cheaper online than at your local shop.
I bought a cheap bike for my daughter a few years back and paid Kozy's about that to assemble it for me. I've always had good luck there. They've fixed broken bikes for me, sold me bikes, and done tune ups. I think ~50 is a small price to pay for a professionally done job. I have only dealt with the store on N Milwaukee Ave.
$65 is a gift.
If I were running a shop and someone brought in a bike to put together that they bought at my online competitor and wanted it put together I might not be quite so generous. I've heard of bike shops telling people in similar situations to send it back to bikesdirect to have it put together...
I have had good luck dealing with Cycle Smithy. A good suggestion will be to find a reputable bike shop near where you live. Anyhow, if James W is offering, that is a great offer.
But Julie's suggestion is great as well, if you wish to do it yourself! West Town Bike and Recyclery open shop will be a good start. Best Wishes...
Edit:
Here are the prices they have at Cycle Smithy (from website)
Build boxed bike (no adjustments): $39
Build and tune boxed bike: $89
+1 for JohnW. to build your bike.

Agreed!
Just that $65 is often NOT that price...

BS!
Most bike shops will gladly put the bike together for a price.
It's nice to see "persnickety" making a comeback. ;-)

It reminds me of yet another reason to hate ning: no sigs.

Sigs would be nice -sort of like how Bikeforums has it -but limited so they don't make the site so slow and hard to navigate via mobile interfaces. How married is the site to the Ning hosting? Is it like a signed-in-blood contract? Maybe you can't even answer that question here ;)
I've seen some really nice sites run on other systems like http://www.simplemachines.org/
Of course there would need to be hosting and all that jazz -but the owner has a lot more control. But I do understand the simplicity of a turn-key community through Ning. There is a reason why they are so successful with their product. It's simple and easy and Ning does all the work behind the scenes.
It's your baby Juile and I, for one, appreciate the work you put into it and wouldn't want to wish on you any added burdens that a more DIY forum engine would entail -especially if you are not up to it.
