Here's a good idea from the Swamp Rabbit Trail in Greenville, SC that I saw a few months ago. The aim is to encourage separation of cyclists and pedestrians on multi-use trails. Part of the trail's width is a four-foot wide rubberized surface that's very pleasant to walk or run on - a bit like the indoor running tracks in the bigger gyms.
Never seen this before. I wonder how well the arrangement works? Perhaps the Park District could experiment with ADDING this (as opposed to replacing some of the width) to a stretch of the LFP. Stranger things have happened....

People will walk on the rubber, and the dogs will be on the leash over on the asphalt.
Separation will already be happening. It was announced at the spring 2011 MBAC meeting that the section of lake front path from Hollywood to Foster would have cyclist commuter pavement added adjacent to lake shore drive. A similar length will be chosen on the south side LFP and should be constructed around the same time. They'll then conduct a study to assess its use and create a tiered plan to expand a separate cyclist commuter route in all areas that are wide enough.
The multi use path will stay be available for cyclists as it is now, there'll just also be a "faster" option if it isn't taken over by joggers and meandering types. The argument for putting it so close to LSD was that it would be less scenic for recreation.
Do you know if there's an official announcement of that online anywhere, Ash?
