Has anyone seen this video?  It's a news article from the BBC about how more and more cyclists are wearing minicams to be able to have evidence in the event of an accident or assault while riding.

Here is the link:

I found it interesting in light of a few near misses that I've had.  Take care.

Very cool idea.  We are the eyes and ears of the street!

I'm in the market for one.  Can anyone recommend a certain brand/model?  Caveats?

I think cams are a great idea if you have the means to get one.  The more bad behavior that's caught and made public the better.

I've been thinking of one, too.  I think there's a bicycle show coming up next month in Toronto, and they might have something there.  Also, motorcyclists have been using them, both road bikes and motocross.  I think I saw some at the last motorcycle show.  At least they would be waterproof and durable.  Looks like it's research time.  Ride safe.

Hey hey.  Forgot I had this saved in my "HOT DEALZ" folder in my bookmarks for years!

Maybe a good (and cheap) place to start for someone looking to venture into the crazy world of cyclecams.

I use an older model Contour VR - they have since released two or three upgraded versions since I bought mine. It is smaller than the GoPro, but the mount necessary to attach it to handlebars is an additional $30 purchase. It came with a mount to attach to skate style helmets, did not try it out on a road helmet.

I have the camera set to the lowest HD resolution which still gives a pretty good picture, and on an 8GB memory card usually run out of battery life before memory on long rides (about 2 hours during the summer). For recording commutes I usually have to recharge the battery about once a week and clear the memory twice a month.

Do they a perpetual loop capability, automatically overwriting the oldest material? That way i could like a video black box?

Sorry Duppie it doesn't. Though that would be cool.

This is the only one I know of that loops (well version 1 looped, and this version 2 supposedly has a helmet mount, not sure if this loops)

After almost getting run over, I decided to dig out my Contour cam from my days in the military.  It has become immensely useful.  You would be surprised all the stuff you catch people doing.  Lately I have found that my head has been on a swivel looking around catching txt n drivers, which i think for cars is as bad as being completely inebriated and driving.

With the Contour you can't loop the video, but if nothing happened and you don't want to keep the video, I usually just reformat the card before I leave for a new ride if I don't have access to download the video which takes all of a few seconds.

I like the cam that cyclist in the BBC video has because you cant really tell they have it on.  Anywho,I have thought several times to start sending videos to insurance and/or the police for some of these really serious violations.

Here's a web site that specializes in reviewing and selling all kinds of helmet cams.  Just goes to show, there's at least one web site for every niche on the interwebs.
