"With all the stolen bike posts lately (and no one thinking "I wonder if there's something under Useful Links for this."), I think it's well past time to make a sticky about the Stolen Bike Registry"

Thanks, registered my stolen bike. I will also register the new one when I find a new/old bike in the coming weeks.

Eric:

I'm so sorry to hear about the theft.  First call 311, file a report with the police and get a report number.  Then, as soon as you can, like in the next hour or two, go to  http://chicago.stolenbike.org/ and file a theft report, so the rest of us can start watching for it.  If you don't have the serial number or photo of the bike handy, fill out what you can and add the rest later.  Good luck, I hope someone spots your bike.  But until you post on chicago.stolenbike, no one knows how to reach you or what the serial number of your bike is.

Eric - Thunder Snow's advice is right on. Also - if you are able; once you have a paper copy of the

theft / police report; take a trip the swap-o-rama. but beforehand; read the thread from the chainlink

from earlier this year on how to recover a stolen bike there. I was there to witness first-hand the recovery of a chainlinker's road bike and it was very rewarding.  good luck to you,

I can hook Eric up with info on S-o-R once his registry listing comes in-- but I only do so when the bike seems likely to turn up there, and there's no way to know without basic details of the theft.
