I've just joined, but I have an ulterior motive. I'm looking for help to get started from the Chicago end of a sole Route 66 ride in April-May 2012. I'm thinking of buying a bike in Chicago, rather than bring one over from Australia. Any suggestions? I'd be looking for a medium-framed flatbar hybrid with front & rear panniers and appropriate gearing.
Thanks for your invitation, Julie.

Have a look at this woman's journal at crazy guy website.

I talked with her personally when she finished in Chicago and she said she would never do it again.  She did say it was worth doing but perhaps in a car.

Her biggest complaint was that the condition of the pavement was not all that great.

If you do a search on the crazy guy site you would probably find more info on biking Rt 66.

G'day AKA

I have been following Oris Barber's adventures (I'm up to page 45)  http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=1r4vFZo&doc_id=7977&v=vZ. He makes me think it's achieveable.

I fully expect that the pavement won't be wonderful, so I'm looking for a robust setup to get me there.

Thanks for your response. I'll have a look at the lady's jouranal. I wasn't aware of it, but Oris did meet a woman who was riding solo from West to East, maybe the same person.

I'll never do it again either; I just want to do it just once.

Ron

I have a whole list of things that are/were better to have done than to be doing.
It sounds like it's definitely achievable.

Good luck with your trip!

Give me a shout when you know when you'll be here and I'll buy you a beer when you get here.

You're on! You've heard about the Australian enthusism for beer?

Don't we all, Kevin? This is something I'd like to try.
And if you show up, I'll buy you your second beer.

You're on  two, Kevin! I look forward to it.
It's an old route for sure but Metra/Amtrak is along a good portion of it so if you need to quit you can.
Once you roll into Flagstaff AZ you can crash at my place! I just moved out here from Chicago and can say honestly Route 66 through town ROCKS!
