I am so livid right now.... front bike light is missing, U-lock is damaged from being screwdrivered in a 'secure garage' with cameras. Reported the incident to building security and they said they would "review the camera footage," but won't press charges if they find the bike thief, because the item in questions is a bicycle. If it had been a car it probably would be a different situation. A big FUCK YOU to bike thieves across the world and double standards...

I would be unhappy, too.  Glad your ride is not gone, though.  I might write a letter to the building owners and let them know that security is not really looking out for you.
Phil -  my bike was stolen on Tuesday.  The director of building security emailed me the footage.  Take a look http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92LO9pqlzJo.  I'm not sure why your building would need to press charges.  You'd be the plaintiff, so you would press the charges.  Perhaps the implication is that they won't give you the footage if they think you'll press charges.  I dunno.  I'm sorry to hear about the attempt.  I guess be glad that they didn't ride off with your bike.

Sorry to hear about you bike getting messed with.

Happened to me last year. Somebody punctured my tires. 3 times in 6 months. I contacted building security and they reviewed the security tape. They never responded with the results, but the problem went away. (I think they figured out who did it, and gave him warning/stern talking to. Not wanting to escalate it, they left it at that.)

Building owners rarely take responsibility for your property. Ever parked a car in a public parking lot? Then you may have seen the signs that the lot owner can not be held liable for damages to your car.

Having them review the tape (and hand over the footage if needed) is not a bad response from building management
