Anyone sell a decent mountain bike without disc brakes anymore?

It's been years since I bought a new bike and my current rides are in pretty bad shape.

Inspired by the Sirrus ad Serge posted, where the second guy is riding a bike with fenders and rack around the city, I started to search various shop and mfg websites.  Have looked at every current offering from Specialized, Kona, Surly I think . . .

But it doesn't appear what I want is still being made . . .?  Almost longing for the days when there was Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale and that was it (but not really.)

What I want:

-Cantilever Brakes stock

-reasonably lightweight frame. Prefer no shock but could live w/ a front shock if it was lightweight and low-maintenance.  Steel would be nice.

-26" wheels (am mildly curious about 29ers but I think they all have disc brakes?)

-reasonable basic inclusion of rack and fender bosses (is that the right word?) Preconfigured with rack/fenders OK but not necessary

I'm sure I forgot something . . . thanks for any pointers. Hoping for something that's available through a LBS I want to support.

Are you looking for a mountain bike for trail and off road riding, or just some with 26" wheels and a more upright geometry?  The Surly Troll stock build comes with disc brakes, but the frame works with rim brakes.  Plenty of bosses and mount points.

Maybe you could modify your search to include hybrid bikes? I think that is closer that what you are describing with the rack mounts, rim brakes, and rigid frame.
Or, the Rawland Sogn might fit your needs, but it's a 650B (in between 26" and 700c).

Thanks-- that was almost the best candidate I came across, but I just want an off-the-rack bike without having to screw around with any mods.

I want it for city riding/commuting/hauling-- don't really care about upright geometry (I ride out of the saddle a lot and if the 'upright geometry' means the handlebars are closer, it's a no-go.)

Thanks Kelvin. I don't want a hybrid-- I want 26" wheels.

Would definitely like to avoid any oddball wheel sizes as that will narrow my tire options, and interchangeability with other parts I have already.

For what you want new you are going to need to build on a frame from Surly; I recommend a troll ot a 26" wheel Long Haul Trucker; the LHT set up right is the closest to what you want.

Otherwise your best bet is to refurbish an older bike.

Thanks guys-- looks like I have no choice but to just overhaul an existing bike.  But way not interested in screwing around with trying to figure out what's compatible. Every time I start that process I get confused and give up.

Odd that nobody is manufacturing what I want given the zillions of different bikes available commercially now.

Look at a 26" wheel Long Haul Trucker, I think it may be closer to what you want then you realize; it may have longer stays on it but I think the rest of it is close to the sort of bike you like to ride now.

Regardless it is a steel frame that takes canti brakes and fits a large 26" tire.

It might be a sign o' the times, but even the steel-loving hipster retro-grouches at Surly are introducing a disc-only version of the LHT for 2012:

FYI, LHTs 54cm and smaller have 26" wheels, 56cm and larger have 700c wheels.

Their website still says sizes 42-62cm are available in 26", and the 700c in 56-64cm sizes.

That used to be the case when I bought mine in 2007. Nowadays Surly offers 26" LHT's in every size from 42-62cm, and 700c in 56-64cm frames
