I posted this over on BF, but got no response. Maybe someone here can help?

I've got a SS/FG with bullhorns and a front brake that is a MTB lever. I would like to add a rear brake and drops with appropriate brake levers.

Where do I start? Obviously I need some drop bars and brake levers, but does it matter which levers I get? Right now, the front brake is a regular caliper style. Do I need to use the same for the rear?

It could possibly need new brake cables depending on the cable mount inside the lever.  Other than that, I think you should be fine.
You will need to get road bars of the proper diameter for your stem and road levers.  Any road lever should work with a caliper brake.

The correct diameter of your stem is key.  I've converted a few bikes with drop handlebars to bullhorns.  If it is a vintage bike the diameter is likely 25.4mm but if it is a new bike the diameter is likely 26mm.  This will effect the fit of the stem to bars and bars to brakes.  So make sure you get the right size drop bars and go from there.

Although the size is similar, the difference is enough to prevent the brakes or bar from staying in place once you start riding.

I'd replace the cables and maybe the housing if it doesn't stretch far enough to the new brakes.  A lot of shops will cut the housing for you for free if you have the exact measurements.

Most any road caliper should work for the rear.  Be aware of the reach (distance from center of mounting bolt to center of pad), as some older frames require long reach brakes.

Tektro calipers and levers are reasonably priced if you can't find what you want used.

Ah, I ought to clarify - this is not a vintage frame. It's an '07 Giant Bowery that originally had drop bars as an OEM setup. With that in mind, I'm fairly certain the stem is OEM as well.

Is there a cost effecient way to source cable/housing and just a rear caliper? Do most shops have used ones laying around in the back?

Bike shops will sell you cable housing by the foot if you know the length you need. Make sure they finish the ends if you don't have a good set of cable cutters and a file to finish the ends yourself. You'll probably be charged about $10-15 for a single cable and rear housing. If you're on a tight budget go to West Town Bikes, or place a WTB ad on craigslist. I'm sure someone here would have spare parts if you're having trouble...I might...
I have a 26mm stem, and it fits both 26mm bars and 25.4 without a shim.  I've never had a problem.  If the bars are too small in diameter, you can just cut up a beer can or whatever, fold it, and shim your bars to keep them from slipping.

John - I cobbled together some parts via craigslist and chifg, but thanks for asking.

Although, the rear caliper is too long - so only half of the pad makes contact. Is your caliper one with shorter arms?
