I want something fairly worthless looking that I can lock up and not worry about, for short neighborhood trips (mostly to the Western Pink Line station.)

I did some searching but have no idea what I'm looking for.

It ought to have a wheelbase adequate to fit a bus rack, I think . . .  and a way to raise the seat.   Any ideas/thoughts? Links? Clarifying questions?

Thanks . . .

not sure about the CTA bus compatible wheelbase (there is a demo unit at the CTA headquarters at 567 W Lake st) and maybe online on their website they have the dimensions; but as far as raising the seat I would suggest this :

get a quick release seat collar and a high seat post (be sure to get the correct diameter - there are a few different ones) and a "leash" (cable) to lock it to the frame. (more prone to theft)

OR ... get a seat collar that has a standard allen bolt and just carry the correct size (probably a 4mm) allen wrench attached to your key ring with your bike like key - that way you are never without it.

just my $.02...hope this helps

BMX bikes will fit in the CTA racks just fine.  You may need to get a taller set-back seatpost if you plan on pedaling while seated.  You can probably find a used one at working bikes or west town bikes.  You might also want to look at BMX cruisers with 24" wheels; much easier to pedal while seated and more condusive to Chicago's sometimes rough streets.
