The Chainlink

I rode in to work today, and now I'm thinking I might have to bus it half the way home.  I live about 7 miles from my office which really isn't bad, but man it is hot out there.  I was just wondering if I'm the only one considering wussing out.

I'm still out there rolling 25 miles a day. I could take the heat but the combination of sweat and sunscreen burns my eyes and gets annoying. Thank god for sweatbands.
The worst is the stupid wind this week.

SWEATBANDS!!!!

why didn't i think of this?!

For me it's not the heat that is the problem but the insane mugginess. I have asthma and days like today make it really hard to breathe, especially while exerting myself. The same goes for insanely low dry temps.

Given the tendancy to subconsciously take one's avatar as the image of the person posting and imagine that image saying the words in the post, Serge you are kind of freaking me out

We've mixed our riding up this week. My longest trips with the guys way north for camp have been in our bus. Other trips like shopping and goofing to the park have been on our bike. My small guys and I were out today and they were really flagging just being outside for under an hour at the farmer's market. And they are used to being out in every kind of weather. It's much easier to keep them safe in the bitter cold. The heat was blazing up off the pavement as much as just out in the air.

If I were commuting on my own I might be more brave but the heat has been pretty brutal. If we didn't need to go to camp I'd probably stick close to home these two days.

I promised my wife she wouldn't be a single parent, so I'm not riding today... but rode every other day this week :)
Meh. I sweat no matter what. I've found that on my short rides (mile-ish) that I sweat less in this heat. Weird.
I spit in the face of the grim reaper, when your 58 and ride, you can do that...did 30 miles this morning. I use quart Gatoraid bottles half frozen with water in an insulated bag on my rack with a blue ice cooler...Ice cold water the entire trip. I reload at a park fountain...Two quart trip.
Classic quote. This should be added to some chicago bike book.

AM rides in are so far so good, and yesterday's fog along the lakefront was a blessing. After-work rides home have been a bit challenging, but was doing okay until this afternoon.... been keeping hydrated and all, but the last couple of miles were rough today. i kept the pace slow, but i was really glad to get off the bike this afternoon.

OTOH, it beats the hell out of what we had in March, and in the heat my joints don't hurt so much, so i'll keep at it through the week.

Ive known some that fill their riding cap with ice cubes and put it on and that seems to help.  It also creates a running shower enroute to work.  Personally I think a cap helps as the visor keeps some of the sun out but decent sunglasses are a must.  Ive noticed everyone going slower in general.  I try to take shaded streets with lots of trees as much as possible.
